Games and scores

DatasetWhat it holdsSourceYearsRowsRefreshed
GamesEvery game on file since 1869: date, teams, score, rankings, site, crowd (CFBD’s from about 2001, earlier ones from the teams’ Wikipedia season articles), the betting line, our Elo’s pregame chance, and CollegeFootballData.com’s pregame win chance for the home team, which it derives from the point spread (pregame_wp, 2013 on), and its excitement index, how far the win probability swung during the game (excitement, 2014 on). On the site: Game pagesCollegeFootballData.com1869–2026112,658Oct 18
Havoc and EPA by down, game by gameFor each team in a game: the havoc its defense caused (tackles for loss, forced fumbles, passes broken up or intercepted, front seven and secondary, out of the other side’s plays; 2004 on) and its offense’s EPA per play on first, second and third down (2003 on, FBS teams), from CollegeFootballData.com. On the site: Game pagesCollegeFootballData.com2003–202639,412Oct 18
Game previewsFor the coming week’s FBS games, each side’s numbers before kickoff as CollegeFootballData.com’s preview gives them: record, EPA per play, success rate, explosiveness, points per trip inside the 40 and havoc, with national ranks, and opponent-adjusted EPA. No odds or picks. On the site: Game pagesCollegeFootballData.com2026280Oct 18
Game previews: key playersEach side’s key players in the preview: its leading passer, two leading runners and three leading receivers by share of plays, with EPA per play (opponent-adjusted for passers and runners), and its kicker’s points added above a replacement. Game articlesGames with their own Wikipedia article (every bowl, plus famous regular-season games back to 1869): attendance, TV network, referee and overtime periods, matched to the game by score, date and teams. On the site: Bowl game pagesWikipedia1910–20251,919Oct 18
Games missing from our recordsGames that Wikipedia’s team-season articles list and our game records (CollegeFootballData.com) don’t have: mostly the early seasons, and lower-division seasons before about 2000, when our source keeps only games against the top division. Each row is a schedule row that matches none of our games; where both teams’ articles list the game alike, it has two sources. A team we don’t have (a club, a service team, a school) is a name only (kind). For the 1908-1914 and 1917-1921 seasons, Spalding’s Official Foot Ball Guide is a second source (the spalding columns: the guide’s year, its scan and how many of the two teams’ records list the game): it confirms rows, and adds games neither we nor the articles have when both teams’ records in it give one score, or one clean record of a team that is FBS today does; the guide gives no dates or sites. These games count in no record, Elo rating or series on this site. On the site: Team-season pagesWikipedia1883–202511,876Oct 12
Results in Spalding’s guides, 1908-1921Each game the teams’ records in Spalding’s Official Foot Ball Guide report for the 1908-1914 and 1917-1921 seasons (the guides of 1909-1915 and 1918-1922 on the Internet Archive), as printed: the record’s team and its score first, no dates or sites. Read from the scans’ OCR text; where a guide has several scans, the score most of them read. records is 2 when the opponent’s record lists the game too. Where it is one of our games, our score is beside it and evidence says how the two stand (dispute 1: both teams’ records, or two scans of one, give another score than ours; ours isn’t changed). An opponent we can’t name is as the OCR reads it. On the site: Game pagesSpalding’s Official Foot Ball Guide (Internet Archive)1908–19218,301
Scores Wikipedia gives differentlyGames whose final score both teams’ Wikipedia season articles give alike, and differently from ours: our score (home_points, away_points) beside theirs, with the two articles. Every game is checked against both teams’ schedules; these are the ones where both disagree with us the same way. Our scores aren’t changed from them. On the site: Game pagesWikipedia1881–202552Oct 12
Bowl payouts as Wikipedia gives themBowl payouts as Wikipedia gives them: the payout in each game’s infobox (often per team), and the latest season’s figures from the list of bowl games (its “Total payout” column, or per team for the playoff bowls). The words are the source’s; the amount is the dollars they name. On the site: Bowl game pagesWikipedia1934–2025577Oct 18

On the site: Game pagesLibrary of Congress19,731Oct 18
Newsreel storiesUniversal Newsreel’s football stories, 1929-1967, matched to our games: the story’s title and words as Universal’s release sheet gives them, the release date and number, and the link to the release’s record at the National Archives (or the Internet Archive’s copy, ia_url). A story names a game when two teams it names met within ten days before the release, or one team and the game’s score, or the bowl by name. StadiumsHome stadiums: city, capacity, year built, surface, roof, elevation, location and photo. On the site: StadiumsCollegeFootballData.com1884–2026852Oct 18
Stadium capacity through the yearsEach pilot stadium’s seating capacity season by season, from the school’s own publications, Wikipedia (at a fixed revision) and CollegeFootballData.com, each figure labeled: Official source (the school’s own document), Independently corroborated (two or more independent sources), Sources disagree (with the figure chosen and why) or Single source. The pilot covers ten programs; /data/coverage says how much is documented. On the site: Stadium pagesCurated, each figure cited1905–2026151Oct 18
Stadium capacity: the evidenceEvery witness behind the capacity figures: who published which figure for which seasons, where in the document, whose knowledge it is (a copy counts as its original), whether it was the school’s own, and the day the cited version was read. The documents’ text is archived privately and never shown. On the site: Stadium pagesCurated, each figure cited1905–2026390Oct 18
Pouring rightsWhich beverage company (Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Keurig Dr Pepper) holds the soft-drink pouring rights at each FBS home stadium, from the season a source first states it. Sources were found with web-searching AI models and kept only where the cited page loads and its sentence names the company and the school; labeled like every curated fact. On the site: Stadium pagesCurated, each figure cited2018–2026110Oct 18
Pouring rights: the evidenceEvery source behind the pouring-rights entries: who published it, which company it names, whether it was the school’s own, and the day it was read. Program factsFacts around each FBS program and stadium beyond the games: apparel partner, costumed and live mascots, student section, pouring rights. About the data

DatasetWhat it holdsSourceYearsRowsRefreshed
CoverageHow much of each curated attribute is documented, for a defined population: each member’s seasons documented, unknown, disputed (sources disagree; a decision picks the figure), stale (no supporting document rechecked within the attribute’s interval) and not applicable, with the population’s definition and the date it was counted. On the site: Stadium pagesComputed here1,666Oct 18
Decisions and correctionsWhere sources disagree on a curated fact, the figure we chose for which seasons and why; proposed until a named reviewer approves. A correction is a new decision that replaces an earlier one, and the earlier one stays here (replaced_by) so the record of what changed is never lost. On the site: Stadium pagesComputed here1927–202651Oct 18
BadgesShort distinctions on team and stadium pages, computed from the data at every publish, never awarded by hand: largest and highest stadiums, most all-time wins, AP titles and weeks at No. 1, oldest programs, and each stadium’s pouring partner. Each row gives the rule that earns it and the number behind it. On the site: Team pagesComputed here365Oct 18
What each source allowsFor each source of curated facts: whether its facts may appear on pages, in downloads and in computed outputs, the credit its terms require, the evidence for that (terms or a permission) and when it was last reviewed. On the site: DataComputed here5Oct 18
Refresh logEvery source’s latest refresh: when it ran, whether it worked, what it loaded, and its failures in the last 30 days. On the site: The dataComputed here113Oct 18

Files, feeds and the API

The API
  • The API: the open datasets as JSON, free and read-only, each answer with its sources and licenses: our Elo ratings, notes and badges, Wikipedia’s honors, public-domain newspapers and weather, and the federal school data; takes and teams as JSON Feeds; embeds. For developers.
  • Game detail: each game’s drives, plays, win-probability chart, box score, weather and lines since 2004, one file per game, read by the game pages.
  • Game logs: every player’s game-by-game lines since 2004, one file per team and season, read by player pages (career highs) and game pages (player stats).
  • Photos and logos: team logos, stadium, player, coach and season photos, each with its credit and license on the page that shows it.
  • Live: scores every three minutes during games, this week’s polls, headlines from ESPN, CBS Sports and Yahoo Sports (links to the outlets’ stories only), and on team pages the newest episodes of podcasts about each team, found through Podcast Index (titles and links to the episodes only).
