Irish Pull Great Passing Attack To Win, 27.0 Lujock and Tripucko Click With 18 Out OF % Pitches ~N’ CLEVELAND. Ohio. Nov. L. Navy’s hapless eleven. already thrice-beaten by some of the better teams, met up with the Nations Number gridiron power today and was raked fore and aft by MUIR derous aerial attack as Notre Dame rolled to a 27–0 victory before 84,070 spectators who jammed Cleveland’s big stadium on the shore of Lake Erie. The Irish capitalized on Navy’s faulty ball-handling and weak sec ondary defenses, three times using recovered fumbles as springboards to touchdowns and winding up the day by converting an intercepted pass into a fourth score. Navy’s line was well-nigh i’m penetrable. but when Quarterback Johnny Lujack and Frank Tripucka cooked their passing arms pandemonium reigned among the Blue and Gold defenders as Irish receivers grabbed 18 of 27 passes thrown for a net gain on forwards of 263 yards. The Irish ball hawks, outrunning and outfoxing the Navy backs, al most unfailingly found the ball where it was supposed to be thrown regardless of whether the passer was Lujack or Tripucka, who divided the quarterbacking about equally. Both of Notre Danes first touch downs came on 30-yard passes. The third was rushed across, but only after series of aerials moved the ball to Navy’s Is and q sub back named Bob Livingston raced AZ yards for a final counter after grabbing miss-aimed Navy heave. Navy Starts Promisingly. For nearly the entire first period Navy looked ready to play its best game of the year. Notre Dame was making no progress with q running attack and three of Lujacks first four passes we’re knocked down. But with little more than three minutes remaining, Bob Schwoeffermann committed the first of Nays seven fumbles and when Leon Hart recovered the Irish began to roll from the Tars’ 43. They banged down to the 80 where Lujack hit Terry Brennan in the end zone for a touchdown after Brennan had raced behind Safety Man Reaves Baysinger. After Lujack had run 81 yards on a fake punt early in the second period, only to tumble and lose the ball deep in Navy territory, Mid shipman Bill Hawkins fumbled back to Notre Dame. The Irish recovcred on Navy’s 38 and scored on three plays, last of which was a 3O-yard pass from Tripuka to Hart who squeezed behind two Navy men. Navy still was full of fight and charged back 36 yards to penetrate Notre Dame territory for the first time, but the attack begged and it was 1870 at half time. Navy’s Onside Kick Succeeds. To start the second half, Navy tried a short onside kickoff, and Scott fell on the ball on the Irish 40 as the Middies maintained pos session in the surprise maneuver. Horne passed to Markell for a first down on the 38. but then Hart of Notre Dame picked up Horne’s tumble on the As. A holding pen atty moved the Irish back Is, but Lujack tossed four completed passes in a row to reach the Navy rs. The Irish moved right in for the touchdown, Brennan going over from the one after a Lujack-to- Brennan pass had gained 10, and Brennan and Sitko had moved up close in short jabs. Earley’s place. ment was good and made the score 20 to 0. The 43-yard line of Notre Dame had marked the deepest Navy penetration up to now, but with Horne in the passing slot. the Midshipmen attempted to get into the game by moving 79 yards to the Irish 81. They couldn’t sustain the attack, however, and lost the ball on the spot. Only by the barest of margins did Navy’s line prevent Notre Dame from capitalizing fully on another tumble, this time by Billy Earl. 1t was scooped up by Bill Fischer on Navy’s SO but the sturdy Annapolis line hurled back Fullback Floyd Simmons on the 1-yard line. Irish Score on Interception. Navy, trying to prevent a second successive scoreless game, launched another passing attack after Ranny Lawrence had recovered a Notre Dame tumble, but Horne’s first at (See NOTRE DAME, Page B-5J
