By Percy II. Whiting. TF the South is to be heard from in football this year-heard distinctly enough for every body in America to know it is Dixie making the noise, the duty of Gre ating the disturbance is clearly and Clearly up to Vanderbilt One other Southern team had an Eastern engagement this year besides Vanderbilt That team was V. P.I. And the Virginia “Polys’ were tremendously trounced at Princeton. The only other International game Of interest this year is that between Harvard and Vanderbilt. From indications seen at Ponce De- Leon park Saturday the Commodore team could make It interest ing for any eleven. Unfortunately for the McGuginites, however they tackle on November one of the strongest teams that has ever rep resented the Cambridge institution and they tackle them at a time when the Johnny Harvards Will naturally be at the top of their game THE Harvard team this year seems wonder The game last Saturday with Amherst was walkover-46 to 0-and demon strated that the Crimson team is going full tilt. In this game the Crimson showed better interference and harder running than in any previous game. and used good judgment IN following the ball and first-clas interference. Harvard has some exceptional men this season. FELTON, is a cork ing punter and seems able to han die the ball well, whether It is wet or dry In this department Harward viii have a tremendous adj vantage over Vanderbilt for the Commodores are shy on punters this year Another good man at Harvard, of whom not a great deal has been heard. is Gardner who plays quarter This is a level headed, quick, cool performer and one calculated 10 run the team with judgment. or course Harvard’s real strength lies in its backs. Than Captain Wendell there is not now and seldom has been a better man He is a whale and one Of the hard est men to stop the game has ever known. Hardwick, Brickley and Bradlee are all brilliant backdeld men. Hardwick has proved him self good open field runner, but IT no great line plunger. If he can get under way he is a hard man to spill. but he is often nailed before he is well started Brickley is star drop kicker Those who have seen Wander bits backheld in action this year are not much worried, but that the Commodores can keep up their end against any average team. OF course Vanderbilt has no one man who compares with Wendell. but it is improbable that the Crimson has any two broken field runners as

NO TEST FOR HARVARD Crimson Rolls Up a TopheaW Score on Amherst Eleven. BRIcKLEY A TEAM IN SELF Brilliant Back More than Makes Up for Wendell in Latter’s Absence. Cambridge, Mass, Oct. 19.-Harvard ran UP the largest score against Amherst at the Stadium this afternoon that it has made against any opponent for the last Several years, defeating the visitors 4S to 0. Amherst was outclassed in every department Of the game, making only one successful forward pass in half a dozen tries and being able TO make first down by rushing but once. Harvard played throughout without its leader, Captain Wendell, but in his alb sence Brickley left nothing to be desired. His work was little short OF phenomenal. To summarize, he scored four Of the six touchdowns and kicked two goals from the field. In the last named accomplishment he sent the first between the uprights from the 20-yard line, but the second was beauty and aroused lot OF enthusiasm even in the Amherst camp. He stood five yards inside the side line and little short Of thirty yards from the goal line. From this difficult angle he shot the pig skin squarely between the posts. lie was strong on the offence and made some OF the 10, 10 and 20 yard gains that were ripped through Amherst’s line and around her ends, paving the way for touchdowns’ The Amherst defence was as weak az was it’s offence. and 1t gave way repeated ly at all points. Hardwick made the sem sational run OF the afternoon. He received one OF McGay’s punts on Haryard’s 20 yard line, and behind a quickly formed Interference brushed by, Amhersts for wards and bowled over the visitors back field, planting the ball behind the line after a 65-yard run. Harvard scored IN each OF the four periods, leading of with the first Of Brickleys field goals and following quick ~ by three touchdowns before the first period was ended. Another touchdown was scored in the second period and In the third BrIckleys difficult field goal and another touchdown brought the score TO 80 to 0. a touchdown in the final Period, made after Harvard had been repulsed, a foot from the goal, by Amherst after series OF gains. produced the final score.
