THE GRID|RON. Mighty Harvard Goes Down, 5 to 0, Before Amherst. Exeter Takes Terrific Fall, 10 to 0, Out Of Bowdoin. Colby, 81; Rents Hill, 0-Some Good School Games. Cambridge, Mass, Oct. 11.-Amherst’ S readiness in taking advantage of Har~ wards inability to hold the wet foot ball enabled her eleven to defeat Harvard, 5 to 0, saturday, in the game on Sol diers’ field. A touchdown was made but the ball which had been too slippery for Harvards men could not be gagged by the Anhersts back to kick the goal. The outcome was particularly eXasperating to the Harvard side because one of the fumbles was made after the ball had been carried across the goal line and Amherst got possession of it just as the first half ended. The game was played in the face of cold northeast rain storm to which the Harvard followers were glad TO at tribute part at least of the poor show ing made by the Crimson players. Nevertheless there was deep chagrin felt over the fact that Harvard of the so-called big four” including Harward, Yale Princeton and Pennsylva- MIA, this season. not only to be scored against, but to be defeated. When it came to rushing, Amherst was out played. 1t was only the inability of the home college men to keep hold of the bail that lost them the game. In fact even Amherst sympathizers We’re will ing to admit that Harvard should have won by a considerable score. This did hot lessen the delight at the victory of their favorite. The Harvard team played faster game and showed to advantage both on the offensive and defensive but no sooner was she in a commanding positon than some one would let the pig skin slip through his hands and the OPP ponents gained thereby. The sole and winning score was made when Harvard had attempted a quarterback kick, from Harvard’s 10-yard line, which Amherst blocked, and Coggeshell. dripping on the ball. pushed it across the line for a touchdown. SHOCK TO CRIMSON Amherst Defeats Harvard, Scoring Touchdown on a Flul1e. Cam bridge, Mass, Oct. 12.-Amherst defeated Harvard by the score Of 5 to 0 Saturday afternoon. It was a defeat wholly unexpected by the Harvard management, and&8a victory not anticipated by the Amherst root ers. f. S4{As5s Harvard played poor football in both periods, but Notwithstanding this fact she would have tied. the score and probably beaten Amherst had not acting Captain Bowditch magnanimously returned the ball after a squabb1e over a decision concerning the necessity of taking distance on an offside play. This generosity of Bow ditch was indeed very costly. In the first half Amherst played like fiends and stub bornly contested every inch of ground. Hurley, the fleet right halfback, was the only man who could gain ground for Harvard He did the work of other backs put together and had to stand a lot of hard knocks when tackled by the beefy Amherst players. Hanley the freshman fullback, did good work UP to the latter part of the first period, when he fumbled the ball as he crossed the line for touch down. He was tackled viciously, and as the ball was slippery it rolled out of his arms and Amherst fell on it for a touchback., iss In the second half Amherst fought at every opportunity. Hurley and

LOOkS BAD FOR HARVARD. Crimson Coaches see no ray of Hope Since Amherst Defeat. Gloom as thick as London fog has settled down over Harvards football quarters since the Crimsou’s defeat by Amherst on Saturday. Never has there been more discouragmenta among the coaches over the outlook, and the undergraduate body rs whole has lost heart. A defeat by team out side of the Big Four has cut the stu dents to the quick, but the feeling is that there are more of them ia store for the Johnnies before the season is finished. There is feeling in Cambridge that possibly Harvard is merely having her annual slump somwhat earlier than usual and that great improvement will be shown from now on, so that a strong eleven will meet Yale on No. yember 2lst. A personal canvas of the University will be started at once in the hope of unearthing some new men, and unless a few s’starsn are found in this way Harvard will PROFESSIONALLY be rep resented this fall by as week an agg e. CATION as has donned Crimson foot ball toys in years.
