HOrween Big Factor in Victory of Harvard ELepen Crimson Right Halfback Plays Stellar Role in Defeat of North Carolina, Fl to O-Bay Staters’ Cause Helped by Use of Forward Passes. Ny DANIEL. boston, oct. l~4.--Harvard’s football team was called upon to do nothing startling In order TO defeat the represcntatives Of the University OF North Carolima in the Stadium this afternoon. Tie score vas 81 to o. the Crimson getting three touchdowns from each OF which the goal was kicked Despite the ease OF the victory. 1t was tinEed with Just a little disa ppointment. for Harvard aimed at least TO equal the 90 points piled up by Princeton agains; North Carolina only last Saturday. In the Stadium this afternoon Il was at all times apparent that the contest was or :hc early season virtage-and not OF the usual Harvard brand at this stage either. A ~ yard run by Casey that made possible fIarvard’s second touchdown in the first period stood out lik a beacon light in the dark. Hair wards tackling was of color. the line played a little too high and the back field did not behave according to the strict Haughtor prescription. yet there was never IA m when North Carolima was not playing second fiddle. Harvard’s general exhibition no doubt suffered because of the absence OF quite a number of regulars. some OF whom had been put hors du combat In the losing battle with Tufts last Saturday. Moseley Taylor on the line and Bond and Flower In the backheld were the most prominent absentees. Only seven Harvard Plays, Harvard appeared to DO equipped with no more than seven plays, which were not varied with any degree of mystihcaton. bu, II had the better coached and heavier team. Some OF the North Carolima men. Tandy. Folger ann Tenant, played fine football. but they were hand!capped by inefficient company Hitch cock and Casey played a fine game in the Harvard backfield II Dadmun did well In the line. North Carolina worked under some disadvantage, for II tried 70 stop Harward with Harvard plays. Coached by Campbell and Cowan. former members OF the Harvard team. North Carolina prescented nothing at all that was not familiar to the Crimson forces. Once North Carolina tried line shift; Of a dis tinct Haughton pattern and IL was sineared 10 neatly that Il was never tried again. Harvard had more frequent recourse to the forward pass than at any other time this season. Evidently Tufts taught Harvard a lesson. 1t tried the pass nine m and completed Il on only four occasions. However. when Il did work the play looked very pretty and valuable. II was directly responsible Tor two o: the ~touchdowns. North aio.ina tr!ed the pass a couple Of TINS and failed. scores In First Period. The Crimson scored two touchdowns in the opening quarter and another In the third period. In the second period Harward mistakes u ineffectiveness cost Two touchdowns. On one occasion Horween was thrown only Inches away from the goal and North Carolina got the ball on downs. Later Harvard tried a for ward pass. Robinson TO Harte, after II a reached the ! yard line. Harte was not up 10 the bali and the try was a dismal failure. Only a few minutes be. fore a similar attempt had advanced the pigskin TO the ten yard mark. Harvard failed to tally In the fourth

CASEY STARS FOR CRIMSON CAMBRIDGE, Mass, October IA foot ball eleven from the University Of North Carolina, coached by Harvard graduate and equipped with Harvard plays was no match for the Crimson team today, and lost, 81 to 0. His open attack was ably supplemented by tho bull-like rushes Of Horween, whose powerful shoulders tore hole after hole in the southern university line. That this was not a weak line was shown in the second period, when they held the best players that Harward called into the game for downs on the 1-yard line after Harvard had four times attacked from the 5-yard mark. At two other stages of the game the Crimson was held for downs. Twice in the first period Harvard croased fhA IA ro1{na ooo1 os -..a run by Harte, an end. Horween’s rushes, a forward pass, in which Harte advanced the ball 10 yards, and Casey and Horween cola borating in short plunges, resulted in the latter getting the first touchdown. The kick which followed Horween’s goal from touch down was run back 90 yards by Casey, and in the next play he raced 40 yards through a broken field, making possf- BILE Burnham’s touchdown on a 12-yard rush through the line. Carolina’s check of Harvard almost at the goal, to which the ball had been taken on another 40-yard run by Casey, and their Illustration Of . forward pass thrust over the line made the second period ecoreless. Starting from mid-f1eld in the third period. Horween rushed eight out of ten times. carrying the ball to the g. yard line with the assistance of a IL yard forward pass, Wilcox receiving. A penalty of Is yards set tho Crimson back. but Murray propelled another forward pass to c. A. Coolidge, who made the last touchdown. Robinson kicked two Of the goals from touch down and Horween one. The last period was one Of erratic play, the Harvard substitutes being without power to gain, but strong enough defensively to stop North Caro- Iina’s attempt to advance.

HARVARD’S HOPE IN TRIMMING YALE Crimson Machine Will Rely on For ward Pass. Harvard has showed her hand. She has made clear one of the principal weapons which she will use to fight Yale on the gridiron this year. It is the forward pass. All this was most evident in the victory which Harvard gained over North Carolina Saturday by the score of 21 to 0. While the defeat. at the hands of Tufts had somewhat lowered the Crimson’s stock, the coaches have not been idle, as the playing in the North Carolina game showed. It was 9 wholly rejuvenated eleven which faced North Carolina. Harvard’s battle with Tufts taught the Crimson a lesson, and this was that the Crimson should get more practice in passing and should use that style of game with greater fre- quency. How far the Crimson profit ed by that lesson can be seen in the North Carolina game when Harvard had recourse to the forward pass at almost every opportunity. Harvard tried the forward pass on nine occa- sions. The forward passes worked by liar ward Saturday were directly responsi- ble for two of the touchdowns. The Crimson players worked the passes in a manner that looked pretty and val uable. In the game with Lehigh, Yale, the victors by the score of 12 to O, were weak on the forward pass, and the at tempts by Lehigh to work those plays worried the Blue more than any other play that Lehigh pulled off. Had Le- high studied the weakness of the Blue closer, it would have found that it lay in the passing style of game, but Le- high seemed unable to get the passes off cleanly. The long ones that the Lehigh team did work gave Yale much to think about, however. In the game with Lehigh Yale de- pended largely on the work of it’s backfeld, notably Legore, who with Bingham came across with the two touchdowns. Yale’s chief style of playing was a line smashing, line tear ing one, while Havards was the passing style. Consequently, Yale’s next move will be to strengthen it’s passing game and give it’s backfield a comparative rest. Tufts Saturday plowed it’s way through almost to the laurels again. The best Princeton coul ddo was a 3 to 0 victory. The Tufts team found the Tigers line almost inlpregnab1e, while the Tigers found the fast aerial plays of the Tufts combination a source of constant menace. Tufts seems destined to carve considerable of niche for itself in the hall of football fame this season.
