BIC SECOND PERIOD WINS FOR HARVARD Gets All 20 Points Against North Carolina Team in That Session. CAMBRIDGE. Mass. October 13.- Had Alladin’s Lamp been available for the North Carolina foot ball team dur ing its game with Harvard here today. it would have rubbed and wished for the elimination of the second period. an interval that provided Harvard with 20 points and victory For three periods the visitors lived up to their name of the Tar Heels, but Harvard crowded all its offensive power into one quarter and denloralized the defense of the Southerners Only once did North Carolina get within striking distance of the Harvard goal line, but even their Notre Dame forward passing plays, taught them by Coach “Chuck” Collins, failed them. The score does not tell the full story, for except for the second period the game was bitterly fought, with both sides punting frequently. The 20 points are attributed to the open field run ming of Gilligan and French The first period was scoreleSs, but ended with Harvard possessing the ball on the North Carolina 6-yard line as a result of offtackle daShes by French and Guarnaccia. On the first plav of the second period Harper tore through the line to score, and French kicked the goal. Q This started the scoring A forward pass intercepted on the visitors 42-yard line gave Harvard the ball. and French and Guarnaccia tore off the tackles to the 5-yard line. Harper bounced into and off several of the Tar Heel” players before he crossed the line. Frenchs placement kick was blocked. Then entered Gilligan. who has been tagged as future Mahan, to take the place Of Putnam at quarter for Harward. He lived up to his reputation and ran wild around the ends and off the tackles to put French in a positon to score from the 1O-yard line. Gilllgan then dropkicked the extra point. Throughout the remainder of the game Gilligan brought the crowd to its feet with his broken field running Magner was the main cog in the Of tense OF the Southerners, although the entire line covered itself with glory as 1t held Harvard on it’s 10-yard line late IN the last quarter. On four successive plays Harvard backs were thrown for losses Forward passes and recovered fumbles gave North Carolina the ball in Harward territory in this period, but its out weighed line could not stop the Harward tacklers. 1t was the South’s only threat
