THE NAVY WON FROM COLBY TEAM Visitors Force Local Gridiron War riors to Nose Out a Is to Ia Victory. ENCOURAGING FOR NAVY. Academy BackfieEd Showed More Speed and Better Team Work. Speed and Better Team Work. Colby College, of Maine. on Saturday afternoon, forced the Navy gridiron warriors to extend themselves to the utmost 10 nose ont a 2S to IA victory. and il was not until within the last few moments of play that the sailors got beyond one touchdown to the good of their oponents for win ming figure The visitors were slightly out weighed and il had been expected the sailors would win by a much more one-sided score. However, Navy was again lamentably weak i’m her line, and showed the same need of better tackling. Time after time it took four and five of the sailors to stop the Colby runner and bring him to the ground The Northerners put up plucky fight all the way. but the Mid dies got the jump on them in the first half. during which they piled up 81 of their 2S points. Colby made bad blunder by taking the defensive at the outset, for there was little to choose ini the offensive work of the teams. This was clearly demonstrated in the second half, when the fight was a standoff, each team crossing the others goal on one oecasion only. The visitors showed the same grit as marked last years game, when the Middies came from behind and won. Cauley. Colby’s fullback, was decidedly the star of the game. He shouldered the lions share of the work in both attack and defense His brilliant run of seventy yards through a broken field for touchdown, after receiving a punt, during which he eth er evaded or shook off all of the opposing tacklers, was decidedly the most spectacular play seen on local field this season. Craig. of the Navy. also made a fine dash of sixty-five yards for a touch down under similar conditions The Middies achieved much success with the forward pass. The encouraging feature of the game from the Navy standpoint were the excellent run ming of Craig, who succeeded Captain Miles at quarterback. in the first quarter; good work along the same line by Miles, Blodgett. Won Heimburg and Davis, and the more efficient use of the forward pass than in any previous game this season. Cauley’s 70-yard run through the whole Navy team for the visitors f. nal score furnished one of the worst features from the Navy standpoint, as Cawley was in the arms of several Navy players before he got under way. Cawley punted splendidly ,having something in length on Won Helm burg who also kicked well and placing the ball much better. The Navy’s | first score was on a forward pass from Craig to Won Heimburg, just after Miles had left the game. The Sec ond was after Craig’s biggest run for GO yards. Both were in the first quarter, and in the second Vail secured a tumble on Colby’s 20-yard line and scored. In the same quarter Cawley running from scrimmage, covered 20 yards and scored a touchdown. Vail kicked all three goals for the Navy and Cawley accepted his only chance for Colby. There was no scoring in the third quarter, but each tailed in the final period Colby secured the first points Stanwood recovering a Navy tumble and carrying the ball across the goa line. Late in the period Blodgeti , broke loose and ran 20 yards. though caught on Colby’s 5-yard line The sailors could not get the ball over in three attempts, and fumbled on the fourth play. Colby returned the compliment by fumbling on the frs play, but the ball rolled to Colby’s 10 yard line. Again the Navy could no ! gain, but were given a penalty of II yards and Failing carried the bal over in two attempts. In winning from Colby, the Acad emy backfeld showed more power speed and variety of attack than at an, time this season, but the old draw backs-fumbling weak tackling ans lack of the final punch at crucial mo ments – sufficiently in evidence t. make the friends of the team still very doubtful about its ability to NEE the Army eleven on equal terms tw, weeks hence. NAVY IS ERRATIC, BUT BEATS COLBY Fumbling and Bad Tack ling Spoil Play at Annapolis. Annapolis, Nd. Nov. l3.-Showing flashes Of football that could fairly be called brilliant, but exhibiting the same faults of fumbling, weak tackling and absence of the final punch which have marked it during the season, the Naval Academy team won from Colby here this afternoon by a score Of % to a. The midshipmen scored two touch downs in the first quarter and one at the opening of the second, Colby having been BANKED, but the honors of the remainder of the game were, on the whole, with the visitors. Colby, however, had oneman Of fensive, Cawley, its fullback, figuring in nearly every play ms the runner with the ball, punter or passer. The friends of the team found great satisfaction over the fine running Of Craig and to a lesser degree Of Blodgett, Davis and Miles. For the first time this season the forward pass became an efficient means of attack in the hands Of the midshpmen. At times, however, the mldshipmen tackled fearfully. This was the case in the second quarter, when Cawlev scrambled out Of n group OF navy lads and ran seventy yards for touch down. Captain Miles started at quarter, but was out of the game in about five min utes of play. Craig, who succeeded him. played such game that there is little doubt that he will hold the positon permanently. He tossed the ball to Won Heimburg for the first touch down, and ran sixty yards, after receiving a kick, for the second. The Navys third touchdown in the second quarter was made By Vail, who secured the ball on O’Brien’s tumble and ran twenty yards for touchdown. Early in the final period Stanwood secured the ball on IA Navy tumble and ran from midfeld for n touchdown. Five minutes before time was called Blodgett, who had succeeded Won lleimburg for the Navy, ran seventy yards, but was caught on Colby’s 5-yard line. Al. ter the ball had changed hands and gone back again on successive fumbles and the Navy had been awarded dis lance on penalty. Failing carried the ball over for the last ouchdown.
