HARVARD LUCKY TO WIN Real Misfortune Keeps Maine from Getting a Touchdown. CRIMSON ATTACK CRUDE Fails to Show Real Power in Sustained Rushing, Although Defence Is Good. hdSsss bfpAs %os-iidi NV was fortunate to beat the University OF Maine by score of to 0 I’m the opening game of the season here to-day. The Cambridge team showed unlocked for crudeness on the rush line, the Maine team almost matching Wendell’s eleven in distance made by rushing, and being deprived of 4 tie game by q bit of real misfortune Harvard started off like a whirlwind, rushing down the field after receiving the kickoff and battering holes In Names line until tile ball had been taken TO within six yards OF the visitors goal. Here. however even the powerful Brick ley could not find a hole, and the ball was lost on downs. Names kick that followed Immediately was poor one, going only 10 the 3O-yard line, from where Harvard bent itself to the attack again and ploughed to the goal line, Brickley reaching the one-yard mark by dragging several tacklers along for sixteen yards. IL was after the touchdown that Maine got going. From mldheld the visitors gained steadily. putting I’m two first downs through the efforts Of Shepard and Garlic ton, and finally reaching the Harvard Toyard line. Here Shepard dropped back as If TO make a field goal, but instead he made a forward pass The Harvard defence was fooled completely, and no one was near Donohue. left end. az he waited for the ball to come down behind the goal line. II looked Ike sure touchdown. but the ball struck one Of the goal posts, bounded back into the playing field, and so Names chance went amiss. The visitors had no other opportunity 10 DO anything. but Harvard three times later in the game failed TO present an at tack that had any power. Once Par menter recovered the ball for Harvard when Briant muffed kick on Names 20 yard line. but three plays failed to gain, and then Hardwicks forward pass was Intercepted. Another muf by Briant made II possible for Harvard to get the ball again, this time on the visitors 30-yard line, but after fifteen-yard advance BEETLE fumbled and the ball changed hands Once again, when a flfty-yard run in OF kick by Logan put Harvard within scoring distance, Names rush line could not be- penetrated, and when Logan tried 10 drop goal from the field the pass from Parmenter was low and the ball was driven into the scrimmage, 10 be secured by Maine. Shepard did some beautiful puntng for Maine, and his kicks were well covered by his ends. Felton’s kicks were not nearly so good as those made by Shepard, most of them being high and with little power behind them Hardwick. who played end when FELTON, kicked. did some beautiful down the field work, and was the only Harvard back who played throughout the game. The Crimson made few substitutions, and only one In the rush line. The for ward pass was used only once by each team, and neither attempt was successful. The teams We’re well matched IN attack, I Harvard gaining rs yards from scrimmage and Maine i06 yards, the Crimson / having only three more rushes from scrimmage than the visitors. whose dis lance was made on thirty-six plays. Harwards rush line was fooled repeatedly by Names runs from kick formations, while Brickley was the only Crimson back who was not stopped easily by the Maine defence.
