HARVARD OPENS SEASON BY DEFEATING MAINE Runs Up Score of “a to 0, in Spite of Spirited Play by Opponents. Cambridge, Mass, Sept. T.-Harvard opened its football season in the Stadium to-day by playing rings around the Uni versity Of Maine eleven. winning by a score OF 81 TO 0. on five touchdowns and four goals This showing was much bet ter than that made against the same team last fall. when the Crimson got only one touchdown and goal. The game this afternoon, however. was rot quite so one-sided as the big score would seem TO indicate. Maine had a stocky team and one that evidently had lot OF confidence in its line attack, for Quarterback Cobb plugged at the Grim son rushers from tackle 10 tackle all afternoon. His team lacked its expected strength in the open game. For the first half the eevens were al most a stand-off on their line gains. but Harvard. by ripping off two tremendous runs, rolled up lead of u points before ward. in fact. got its first touchdown on the first play Of the game, Quarterback Logan receiving the kickoff on the 10 yard line and with an interference that everywhere surrounded him lodged his way through and scored. Maine hardly had recovered from this shock when Ed die Mahan. running from Names 70-yard line on a fake kick. swept around his opponents left wing. and. aided by the skill full blocking of Coolidge and Logan. ran the entire length Of the field. The three other touchdowns resulted from a display OF well ordered line at tack. Two of them would not have been scored had II not been for fumbles on the part Of the Maine backs. In the first period Hitchcock got the ball after Fox had dropped ii on Names 20 yard line. Mahan then sitting through behind storer for 12-yard gain, and with a first down on the eight-yard line Harward scored In three plays, Mahan carry ing the ball over while Bricklcy was drawn back as II 10 try for a goal from the field. Harvard’s score in the second period was made on a fine 3o-yard drive UP the field, Maine with only yard to gain for first down. having been unable 10 force its way through and losing the ball on downs within scoring distance for Harvard. The pIavs that followed this opportunity were the best that Harvard put on In the game Mahan, Brickley and BEETLE all running well with the ball and the rushers lifting their opponents back as they did In no : other part Of the game. The four veterans on the Harvard team-Brickley. O’Brien. Hitchcock and Storer-all showed last years ability while OF the newcomers. Mahan, Cowen’ | Coolidge and Hitchcock played good foot | ball. Coolidge’s game at end was al all times striking. His tackling In the nlays that Maine sent at his side OF the line was splendid. and besides recovering | the ball twice on fumbles. he blocked a | k,ck and then proceeded to smother the | ball on the rebound Nehan’s open field running demon ! strated what a star Harvard has this | fall 10 work with Hardwlck and Brickley’ while Cowen has the markings OF var | s,tv Iineman. Martin was the Maine teams only consistent ground gamer, he playing a star game. Maine came here ill-prepared to bat tie, having little other than straight plays, or if they did. failed To use them against the Crimson eleven. Harward on the other hand did not exert themselves over much depending on what few plays they had perfected. Martins work for the Maine team was easily the feature of that eleFn. He gained more ground than the other two put together. saved Maine from a doubly Illuminating defeat by his quiekness in breaking up the Grim sons attack. Several times he pound ed his way through well-orderad in reference getting his man for a loss. The feature play of the game was developed by the first kickoff when Logan received Names kick on Harwards 23-yard line and ran 81 yards for a touchdown. The Maine players seemed dead, so quickly was the play rolled off, and few minutes later Mahan took the ball for a right end run. and carried it 20 yards for an other Crimson score.
