MAKE RECORD SCORE Middies Find The West Virginia Aggregation Easy Meat In Sat- urday Afternoons Game. THE BEST FORM YET Shifts In Formation OF Navy Team Seem To Increase Whole Effect OF Fighting Machine. Literally playing their opponents off their feet and piling up their record score for the season, Navy’s football warriors on Saturday afternoon swamped the aggregation from the University of West Virginia in a 80 to contest. Forty yards away was the closest the visitors ever got to the MILDLY goal line, and only once or twice during the whole forty-eight minutes of play did they make first down against the stong sailor forwards 1t was the first time this season that the Middies have hit rapid stride, and they simply played rings around the West Viz ginias. While there were a few rough spots, the team, both in offensive and defensive tactics played up to stan dard that was most pleasing to Navy adherents. And right here let it be said that the punting of Dalton, the slashing halfback, was superb. His kicks ranged be ween so and 60 yards and two of his punts during the early part of the game sailed a distance of 65 yards. On the whole they were very we’ll placed. Navy’s splendid success is due al most entirely to the shifts made in the hackfeld positions in the course of the past weeks practice The lack of team work in the attack has been the main failing of the Middies so far this sea son, but the coaches now seem to have hit upon a combination that should give much encouragement for a victory over the West Point cadets when the two service teams clash on Franklin Field two weeks hence. McReavy and Rodes, who played in the back field last season and who have filled halfback and fullback, respectively, in this seasons work, were forced to content themselves with positions on the bench. In their places were Collins and Bates, smaller fell lows, who get off with play with the vim and dash that counts for yards Quarterback Sowell was also re. e. Dated to the side lines, and Byrd, an there fast nan, was in the pivotal position. Though in that place Gilchrist, the regular right end, did the real work of the quarterback. He played the end position most of the time, both on the offensive and defensive, but he gave all of the signals and frequently carried the ball. In the latter particular he shifted his place with Byrd. incidentally, Gilchrist proved consistent ground gamer, and the change seems to be a good one. That Col Inns and Bates were in the backfield was due prinipally to injuries sustanned by Leonard and Nichols in practice. With these four fast men available, all of whom have shown much ability, it would seem that Rodes and McReavy have lost out entirely, as has also Sowell. The Mid dies walked away with the Morgan town boys in the first half, which end ed with score of 20 to O. In the first quarter they registered touchdown and goal and Dalton kick ed pretty goal from placement from the 35yard line, while the second period counted for two more touchdowns and the resulting goals. The second half was marked by rather listless playing, though the sailors managed to tally touchdown in each of the quarters. While the Navy backfield men made number of short sprints, there was but one Individual feature deserving of mention. That was Dalton’s run Of 80 yards from a fake kick formation. 1t was in the final quarter that the visitors, afte finding that they could not gain through the line resorted to the for ward pass and other fancy plays, and while they netted substantial gain on several occasions, they could not follow them up successfully The lineup and summary:

Midshipmen Beat West Virginia Eleven by 80 to O. Annapolis, Nov 1.-THE biggest score Of the mdshipmen’s season was rolled up this afternoon against the University of West Virginia the Naval Academy winning by 80 to o. Notwithstanding the big score made by badly crippled Navy team, the game was not particularly satisfactory to the friends OF the latter. as the visitors did not exhibit enough football to really extend a team that will meet West Point IN two weeks. The work of the local eleven was not as good as II should have been In sew Cral departments. Dalton’s splendid punting was the blg element in the score piled up by the mdshipmen to-day. His punts covered from fifty-ive TO sixty-five yards each and were beautifully played. Opposite him was Rackman. the poorest kicker who has essayed to do the punung for an opposing team this year. lie rarely drove the ball twenty yards past the rush line and frequently punted outside az distance of from ten TO fifteen yards. THIS state OF affairs resulted In the ball being III West Nirginias territory most Of the time with the visitors struggling in vain TO work II down the field Dalton was allowed TO let himself out in the first half and bowled over opposing linemen in a fashion that recalled his best work of former years lie was out OF the game in the third period and returned for the last. lie was the only man in the backheld who had been regularly used in his position OF the numerous other backs used during the best work. Two touchdowns and a field goal were scored in the first period and touchdowns in each Of the others. Forty-eght German cadets from the training ship Hansa were among those who saw the game The lips-up follows.
