NOW FOR POINTERS Coaches To Polish Sailor Team Up For The Big Game During This Week Before Leaving Fri day. SATURDAYS SCRUB TEAM. Second String Men Make Wonderful Showing Against Penn States Strong Aggregation OF Stars. With all Of their local scheduled games passed and only the big struggle against Army on next Saturday yet to come, the coaches at the Naval Academy will this afternoon start to put the finishing touches to the sail ors’ fighting machine. Tn showing Of the second choice men of the Navy string against Penn State on Saturday, while Captain Dalton, Gilchrist, Brown, Hamilton and others out on the sidelnes looked on, did wonders to boost Navy stock. After solid hour Of play, the Pennsylvamans, ,conquerors of Pennsylvania Uni versity and others of the bigger fell lows, were unable to get across the Navy line and were forced to 90 back to Belle Fonte with 0 to 0 score staring them in the face. When the game with State College was arranged. the Navy management was unaware that their big game with the Army cadets would be played on the Saturday before, instead of the Saturday following Thanksgiving Day. AS a result the Navy coaches were rather adverse to taking chances of having any Of the regulars knocked out by injuries with the great game only a week off and Captain Dalton and eight of the teammates did not even get into their football clothes Saturday. They watched the game from the side lines. The only varsity man in the lineup were Howe, at right guard. and Weems at center, and both of these players gave way to substitutes before the contest was over. The middies have but four more days for practice on the home grounds, as they will depart for Philadelphia early Friday morning, last practice being held on Franklin Field that after noon. The final roundup of their work will be surrounded with the ut most secrecy, as the coaches, it is said, have devised some new cracker Jack formations. As far as physical condition is concerned, the players are in as good trim as they ever have been toward the close of the season, and the greatest care will be eXercised to guard against injuries in the final stages of practice. The forwards are pretty we’ll set tied upon, with the exception of right end, vacated by Gilchrist, who the coaches shifted to quarterback, to solve one dilemma and right tackle. 1t is likely, however. that Overesch, “plebe,” who played such strong game against State, will be seen on that wing at the start. Davis. last years tackle, is having a hard fight with Ralston and Redman to retain the position. Brown, picked by many experts as All-American timber last year, will be at left tackle, while Hamilton. an other veteran, will occupy left end. The guards will be Elmer and Howe, with Weems at center. Captain Dali ton and Nichols will be the halfbacks, and Rodes probably will be the final pick for fullback.

NAVY CHECKS A RUSH Penn State Held to No Score Tie by MiddieS. Annapolis. Nov. 1S.--Although the Navy feared to run the chances of injury to its regular backs and ends, with the Army game only week Off and filed those positions to-day with subs, a no-score tie was played against the strong Penn State team, and the Navy has the honor of being the only opponent this year which Penn State has not defeated. Captain Dalton, Brown. tackle; Gi’chrst, and others OF the regulars did not even don football clothes, the coaches apparentity fearing that some crisis might make them forget the determination not to risk them, no matter what might he the need. il was really expected that State would win the game by small score, and the excellent showing Of the patched up team caused much satisfaction. The ground was sloppy after an all-night rain and Miller, the fast and clever dodger who plays quarterback for state, and who has got away with long runs against every team this year. knocked off runs up TO seventy five yards. At the close OF the first period State had the ball three yards from the Nays goal line and it was thought that the visitors would certainly score at the opening of the second quarter. However. a stand was made. the ball recovered on downs. and Collins kicked out of danger. At no other time was either goal line seriously men aced. though the midshipmen forced tho fighting in the last period Cochran. Byrd and Collins in the back field and Overesch on end did excellent work for the midshipmen. Cochran was the leading sub back last season, hut this year has been in poor condition. His work to-day may have won him a place on the regular team.
