HARVARD GETS A SCARE. Holy Cross Holds Heavy Crimson Eleven to Low Score. REGULARS WEAK IN ATTACK Make Only One Touchdown and a Field Goal--Wigglesworth Meets with Accident. Cambridge Mass. oct 7.-Harvard’s an ticipated brace against Holy Cross failed 70 materialize to-day for the Worcester team was beaten only by the score OF 2 To 0, the regulars scoring a touchdown and field goal IN the first half and the substitutes falling 70 do anything in the second The Crimsons score was IS points less than Yales against the same team. but Holy Cross was in much better shape to play and put up an exhibition Of much sitter and smoother football In the first half Harvard approached the Holy Cross goal only twice. The first time was after three exchanges Of kicks had brought the ball past the middle Of the field for Harvard and when. after Grau- stein had made 10 yards behind Harvard’s right wing Wendell behind the wing Shift Grove through the other side and ploughed through the Holy Cross defence for 40 yards and n touchdown. The second time was nearly at the end of the first half when Rogers recovered an onside kick on the Holy Cross 15-yard line, from where Harvards holding cost 10 yards. 1t was here that Potter backed away almost 10 the 40-yard line and made an accurate drop kick for three points. In the second half the regulars were withdrawn and the substitutes, under Wig ellsworth. were played for twenty minutes In the third period the substitutes were within the Holy Cross 30-yard line three times. being penalized the first time as Wirglesworth tried a field goal, which he missed. again losing the ball when he fun bled while trying 70 make a forward pass and later losing the ball on downs. Near the end Of the last period Hitch cock recovered an onside kick for Harvard on the opponents 2O-yard line, but a for ward pas could not even be started. Mil holland was then sent out from the side lines to make a drop kick from the forty yard line but the ball carried low. Holy Cross was strong defensively, except when scored against. and for time IN the sec ond half. when ‘Bren. Smiths substitute at right end. made two twelve-yard gains. running from his position and taking the ball on delayed passes. Holy Crosss attack when directed az the Harvard ends or CEN tire was completely smothered, Rogers prov ing of great strength at left tackle and bolstering that side Of the line to a very satisfying degree Holy Cross, however, developed the forward pass much better than Harvard did In the second period three forward passes in succession were made successfully and netted a complete gain Of forty-seven wards Whalen and O’Brien did the passing, and the third pass, on which O’Brien took the ball from Whalen. the Harvard back field. vas “foxed” completely, and after getting the ball O’Bren ran eighteen yards 10 Harvard’s ffteen-yard line, where he was bounced upon by Wendell. There was no punch TO the line attack that followed, and when Gibson went back to try a goal from placement the combination Of A poor mass and Fetons activity in breaking through blasted the only chance that the visitors had all afternoon. ON the whole, Harvard’s play was dlsamounting Wendell was tho only PACK whose running was at all consistent, Black .U being the BEST man in the secohu string. Wlgglesworth’s work at quarter was very ragged, but to the coaches THIS lost consequence when the veteran was al tscxed 80 hard while running back KICK. almost AT the close OF the game, that MS iaft ankle was badly fractured. Sons Of Eli Show Well Despite Low Score at Holy Cross. Tryout Given Different Styles of New Game. EVIL DAYS AT HAND Harvard Crippled by Injured Players and Slow Men. Western Games Show Coaches Are Learning New Rules. New Haven, Conn.,, Oct. 1O.-On a basis or comparative scores for the early season period, Yale appears the top notcher of the eastern football the Ellis rolled up 26 points a week ago with comparative ease, using substitutes for about half of the game. Last Saturday, under about the points. Princeton has been registering some large scores, but has not met any teams as strong as the Holy Cross eleven and has shown a lack of concerted action, the power and the spirit, which has characterized the Yale play. The varsity coaches here are not making any sanguine claims to cham pionship titles this early in the season. but they declare with some conf dence that If the developemnt of the big elevens is equal from now on. the Blue will have the edge, so to speak, on Harvard and Princeton. OF course much may happen between now and the championship contests. Yale Tries New Plays. YaIe’s twelve to nothing score against Syracuse was a disappointment to some of her supporters. but side line observers noted that the Blue styles of the game and did not at tempt a high score game. Analysis of the contest clearly reveals a team that will go far. Harvard. on the other hand. was hard pushed by Holy Cross. according to the Yale scouts. But for a tumble, the Worcester eleven probably would have scored on a placement kick from the 10-yard line. Princeton scored 81 points on villa Nova, but this tally was due almost entirely to the speed of the Tiger backs. Villa Nova’s line showed a de- Tense that bothered Princeton at practically every stage OF the game. Cambridge, Mass. Oct. 10.-With two quarterbacks on the hospital list and a probability that WigSiesworth will not play again this season, Harward has fallen on evil days with regard to the connecting link between the line and the backs. Potter, who from present indications will retain first call on the position, is regarded as the most accurate and discerning thrower of the forward pass in the eastern ranks, but there is almost no one available for a substitute. Harvard Is Out Guessed. There lis good material at Harvard this year and plenty of it, but not the tip-top material there was in several places in the line last year. 1t is evil dent that a finish is lacking in Harwards play as compared with last year. Still, there are flashes of real first class football which gives the coaches hope An Improvement is noted in the interference of the backs and flankers and more aggressiveness. A marked weakness in the Holy Cross game was inability to diagnose the open play formations of the visiting eleven. Chicago. Oct. 1o.--Although there were few surprises in Saturdays FOOT ball games in the Middle West the advanced form displayed by the major ity of elevens, the frequent use OF the forward pass and other open plays showed that the coaches and players already have good ideas of the posibilities of the rules and the caliber of the gridiron game in succeeding struggiles it is predicted will improve. What About Iowa. In the west the form of Chicago, Illinois and Northwestern, the mediocre work of Minnesota, and the defeat of Purdue by Wabash caused much comment among football play ers. who believe the conference title now lies between Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Chicago. Iowa has not haan mt to the test
