INDIAN BRAVES LOSE Carlisle Succumbs To Navy Team In Saturdays Great Game On WOrden Field DALTON’S BRILLIANT WORK Enables Midshipmen To Sco-e In Last Period To 0-Redmen Fail At Their Tricks feTiOu 10 U-keumen fai A Their Tricks By defeating the Carlisle Indian football team Saturday afternoon on Worden Field at the Naval Academy, 6 to 0, the Navy gave reason for the local contingent to feel encouraged as to victory over the West Point cadets two weeks hence. Saturdays game was one of the most stubbornly contested th.t has been witnessed on an Academy grid tory of the Mldshipmen was we’ll deserved one. 1t came after five minutes of the last period bad expired an after the teams had kick ed and rushed the ball first to one and then to the otner end of the ! field. To score its touchdown, Navy worked the leather for a total of so yards. Dalton $ splendid 30-yard dash contributed largely to the score. 1t brought the ball within three yards of the coveted goal line, from which point in two plays Dalton himself carried it over. He fumbled the bali in the plunge, but Brown, Navy’s big guard. was on the spot to fall on it for a touch don. The same player kicked goal from a difficult angle Each team had several chances to score during the early stages of the game. The Mdshipmen, upon being held when getting within the danger zone, took advantage of chances for field goals and Dalton failed in five attempts. Carlisle was bent in cross ing Navy’s goal line, but their efforts were fruitlesss. The desperateness with which the game was fought was { indicated by the frequent penalties inflicted. Dalton made five unsuccessful at tempts at field goals, though the first one, in the opening session, which was at dis tance of 40 yards from the bar, went as straight as an arrow, but fell about three feet shy of its mark. Though Big Pete Houser who played at quarterback for the In dians, is a postmaster at field-goal kicking, the Red Men were apparent ly bent on invading Annapolis hitherto uncrossed goal line, for they depended almost entirely upon rushing the ball. Only once, and that just before final time was called, did Houser make an attempt at field goal, and this was blocked by the Middies. One thi:g stands out prominently as the result of Saturdays game, and that is that the Middies have power full machine when they buckle right down to business. Without detracting from the stubborn and gallant detense exhibited by the Indians at critical stages, the Middies at times tore great holes in the line. Five minutes of the fourth period had elapsed when, getting the leather in mid-feld, after an exchange of kicks, the Navy started a steady march down the field. In three plays Sowell, Dalton and Clay ripped off 20 yards, and on the next lineup Dali ton, Navy’s star back and kicker, made a mighty dash through the In dians’ left tackle and sprinted 80 yards before being downed by Houser. This planted the leather within three yards of the coveted line. Whe play was resumed Clay, on a plunge through right tackle, took the leather yard nearer, and then Dalton drove through the opposite side of the line, carrying the ball over. In the play Dalton fumbled, but Brown, the Middies’ big right guard was on the job and fell on it for touchdown. The ball was punted out for the try for goal and Brown kicked it from a difficult angle. The Indians showed complete sur prise at this quick change of things, but they were undismayed and went after the Middies with even greater steam. They made a valiant rally, after getting the ball on a punt near their own goal, and began expouding theil trick plays, for which they are famous. In this way they car ried the ball straight down the field for total of SO yards and seemed destined for a touchdown. A for ward pass by the Indians brought the lather to Navy’s 30-yard line. At this point the Middies got together, checked the progress of the Red Men to the extent of forcing Houser to try for a field goal as a last resort to score at all, and they blocked it. A half-minute later final
