IOWA CHAMPIONSHIP Saturdays Games Give But Int tile Line on the Relative Merits Of Teams UNIVERSITY SHOWING GOOD Missouri Had Developed a Strong Eisysn, and Varsity. Victory Was ! ctsdit A “a Kirk and Kent Did Great Work – GrinnelPs Defeat Of Drake Surprise. UNIVERSITY SHOWING GOOD IBy X. D. steere.l Special To Times-Republican. Cudl ~ UOlucIluS l1Io LVol paAl A0AA0” ers of Iowa this week is just what the meaning Of the games OF the Iowa. Missouri and Ames-Minnesota teams is. with reference to the determination Of the state championship contests TO be played between Iowa and Ames the last Of next month. The defeat OF Drake by Grinnell has all of the novel ty of the unexpected: the defeat OF Ames marks the first reversal the Az gfes have had this year: but the out come of the Iowa. Missouri game has been expected to give the state Its first line on the real strength OF the Hawkeye team. Des Moines college In scoring a substantial victory over Cor nell showed that Boyle has been teach ing the Baptists lot OF, foot ball since they played Coe to a standstill In Cedar Rapids two weeks ago. Tho Hawkeye Strength. 9 No estimate can be made of the ! Hawkeyes strength without a sum : mary Of what Coach MonilaW of MISsouri, has developed thia year. His team outweighed Iowa, tho but slight | “; his line outweighed the Iowa line materially and for the largest part OF the game threw back the direct a. tacks on. it without gains. His right end was weak his left end strong, and his backs slow in getting away with their plays. Missouri could have beat en- any one of the minor colleges OF Iowa, including Coe, Grinnell, Drak, and Des Moines college by a substantial score The attacks on the Iowa line had lots Of weight behind them and were fairly we’ll executed, but they failed to gain. Against any other teaT In the state with the exception ct Ames, they would have netted good MANY yards. But against the Iowa line they failed to gain, and the Missouri, backs were unable to run Iowa ends. The Tigers greatest gain was made on one cleverly executed forward pass. Kirk and Kent. The most substantial gains made by the Hawkeyes were netted by the gilt edged work of Kirk and Kent in the Dack NelQ. III IuIliIlS5 pstSh PoAiss’. brought the ball back from 10 to ~ Yards every time it was kicked to them and as .Fewett of Missouri was o n Kicking the ball from twenty TO thirty yards, while Kent was booting 1t forty to sixty yards, Iowa was gaining from thirty to fifty yards on every exchange Of punts. The forward pass was re- 4ponsible for good many yards. made by the Iowa team. And take it all n all. the Hawkeye strength can be sum med up in a fairly strong line, Kent’s kicking ability. and the free use OF plays permitted by the new rules. Tbs back field lis pretty shifty on its feet in finding the openings and for These several reasons it is believed thai | Coach Chalmers will have good team | this fall. - The Ames Showing. | The Minnesota -Anles game uoes not mean SO much, relatively. The Go piers were playing their first game OF the season. They did not use any thing but the simplest formations or account of the fact that Maroon spies were In the grand stand. The work OIL | the team was unfinished, and Ames was crippled by the loss OF Jeanson, whose sprained ankle kept him out OF | the game, The game told the state nothing of the Aggies’ strength that it did not already know. Whether the presence of Jeanson would have made any great difference in the number OF points registered by the Gophers Is a matter for speculation. 1t Is believed here that Dr. Williams, If he had been going out, after points, could have run the total up around 40 If he had want | ed to. But manifestly Williams does | not want his men to hit fast gait for a couple of weeks yet, and SO Ames was treated gently. Too Early for Comparison. | 1t is too early in the season yet. to make any comparisons between Ames and the state university. The two | teams will meet on Iowa field four weeks from Saturday in the game which will undoubtedly decide the state championship OF Iowa. Following the Minnesota game, Ames can be expected | to 60 back little bit in form. They | reached the high point Of their mid season form during the past week. and during the next seven days the men can be expected to relax little before starting on the upgrade to prepare | for the Iowa game on November “a | On next Saturday, Ames will meet the University OF South Dakota at Ames ] and the Aggies can be expected to win | 1t will be remembered that Nebraska defeated U. of S. D. three weeks age | by to 0. Next Saturdays Games. 81, Y. 81. day in which Iowa college teams will participate, the largest number to be played any week during the entire sea- son. But by far the most important of these games is the contest between Iowa University and Wisconsin Uni versity, to be played at Madison. Wis consin is weaker than it has been in several years past. Iowa is almost a. strong, IL not quite as strong, as 1t was last year at this time. The Badgers have about Ave men Of varsity cal | iber; Iowa has about that same mum Der. The number of substitutes or both teams are about the same in number and ability. Iowa will have the disadvantage of having to make q long trip and play on a strange field | Wisconsin will have the advantage OF being acquainted with the surround ings and having the moral support o! several thousand rooters. The odds are against the Hawkeyes, yet Coach Chalmers men have the best chance to win Iowa has had against any Con- ference team since Iowa defeated Ili-
