    IOWA OUT OF THE RUNNING Defeat by Missouri Puts it Out Of the Championship Class. SCORE THIRTEEN TO TWELVE Hawkeyes Play an Erratic Game, at Times is Brilliant, but Again Indifferent, While Mis- souri, f. Consistent. SCORE THIRTEEN TO TWELVE IOWA CITY, Ia, oct. s0.-Cspecial Tel egram. Iowa was definitely put out of the Missouri valley championship race when Missouri won a hard-fought game here today by a score of 10 to IL. The Tigers scored a touchdown in each half and a place kick by Bluck in the first period Of play. The Hawkeyes braced later in the game and with splendid marches down the field scored two touch downs, both being made by Murphy, who was put in at fullback for Wright In the second half. The weather was too hot for foot ball and both teams suffered in consequence, Iowa more than Missouri. Several substitutions were made in the second half. Iowa played erratlo foot ball. For two periods of six minutes each the Hawk eyes played the foot ball which tied Ne braska and even better, but the general showing was poor. Missouri had the bet ter of the argument most of the game. The Tiger backfield was strong and time after time punctured the Iowa line for big gains. Linz bucks by Bluck, Alexander and Wilder, together with Halls splendid punting, were the features of the game from the Missouri standpoint Little Saunders ran the team well and played heady foot ball, picking the weak spots in the Iowa line with accuracy. Fee got away with one long run, but his handling Of punts was not up to expectations. When the team braced in the sec ond half his play was fine and he ran the team with rare judgment. Murphy was the star Iowa ground gamer. The nervy fullback, despite the injury sustained in the Nebraska game, played great foot ball and his hucking made possible the two Iowa touchdowns. Cap tain Gross and Hyland played a good game for the Hawkeyes, and Hyland’s running with the ball was one Of the features of the second half. Halfback Dyer shared honors with Murphy in the long advance for the second Iowa touch down. Missouri scored after eighteen minutes of play in the first half Of splendid line bucking; Alexander crossed the line. Bluck made a place kick eight minutes later from the field and the half ended 8 to 0. In the first minute of the period of play Wilder broke through the line for a fifty-five-yard run. Bluck missed goal, making the score 10 to o. Iowa rushed a touchdown across twelve min utes later, largely through the splendid bucking of Murphy and Dyer. Later in the half O’Brien grabbed a kick, reeovering the ball for Iowa. Iowa repeated it’s forward march in the same manner and after Hyland kicked goal. The score lacked one point of being tied. The game ended in three more minutes Lineup;

    MISSOURI BEATS IOWA. Tigers Nose Out by Close Score of IS to IL. Iowa City, Ia. Nov. 1.-After being | in Iowa eight days the Missouri Tigers are now the conquerers of the football teams OF the two great Iowa universtiles. Saturday on Iowa field Missouri, whipped the University of Iowa team by a score of 13 to II. Playing old style football, as has been their program all fall, the Tigers tore through the Iowa line time and , time again for great gains. Bluck added three more points to the touch downs of his teammates by goal from field early in the first half. Not a forward pass was tried by the Mis- souri, team while Iowa only used the play two or three times Throughout a greater part of the game the Tigers outplayed their OPP ponents in every point of the game. The Iowa play was erratic but in the middle of the second half the team took a wonderful brace and with a sensational squirt twice carried the ,, ball over the Missouri line for touch downs. When the first half ended the score stood, Missouri s, Iowa, 0. Alexander made the first register for the Tigers after eighteen minutes of play, carry ing the ball around the end for a touchdown. Eight minutes later Bluck added three more points with a goal from field. During the remainder of the half there was no scoring. ing of the second half Wilder broke through the entire Iowa team and ran fifty-five yards for a touchdown. The goal was missed and the scoring for Missouri was over. Within few min utes the Iowa team started its squirt and with sensational bucking by Muir ply and Dyer carried the ball down the field sixty yards for first touch down, which was made by Murphy. Again the ball was taken back to the middle of the field and again the ter rife bucks of the Iowa team carried it across for another touchdown. Hyland made both the goals. the ball moved backward and forward between the two teams without any consistent gains. When the whistle blew the ball was on Iowa’s thirty five-yard line in Missourfs possession. Bluck, Alexander, Wilder and Hall were the stars of the Missouri team. The entire back field punctured the Iowa line again and again for sensational gains. Saunders playing his first game at quarter made a splendid showing, picking out weak spots in Iowa’s defense. Murphy, Dyer and Hanlon did the best work for Iowa. Hanlon was SO badly injured that he had to be taken to the hospital. Fee, the Iowa quarterback, did not show the class in running the team that he did in the Nebraska game.

Missouri eleven differed in their opinions on the relative merits of the Iowa and Ames elevens, both of which the Tigers met inside of. week Missouri tied Ames 6 to and won from Iowa 10 to 10. Some of the Missouri team believe Iowa is the stronger eleven while 9TH ers regard the Aggies as the better Clare, the Missouri full back, who played thru the Annes game but who was kept out of the Iowa game on account of injuries, backs the Hawkeyes to win when the two great state rivals meet on Iowa field Nov. 49, Iowa has the better team he said. sAll that the Hawkeyes’ need is a little consistency to make a great eleven TIL result against Missouri was a great disappointment to the students. The Iowa team showed fine form at times but at other stages in the game it was pitifully weak. The hot wealth er affected the Iowans more than Missouri, and the fact that Murphy was not in the game the first half was also vital in the offense of the team. More shifts are due in the lineup before the team will be ready for Drake. Alexander will probably sup plant Earet at left tackle while Ham son and Hanlon may not be in the line up which faces the blue and white at the Stadium next Saturday afternoon. Hyland’s wonderful punt from behind his own goal line over the heads of the Missouri backs will probably resuit in his doing the punting as we’ll as the drop kicking. This will give Coach Griffith a chance to work a stronger man in at guard and hence brace the center of the line which was decidedly weak Saturday.
