FOOTBALL. Harvard Has Easy Victory, % to 0, With U. Of Maine. Bowdoin Takes Game, IS to 5, from New Hampshire State. Bates Defeats the Boston COLLEGE,. Eleven, Tito S. d. Boston. oct. 12.-With team of sub. stitutes. Harvard came within one point of rolling up her largest score of the season against an opponent whom she expected to be teugh proposition. In the game on Soldiers field. yesterday afternoon. Harvard defeated the Uni versity of Maine by a score of % to o. When it is considered that, with the exception of two men, Maine had her entire championship eleven of last fall, and that Harvard. on the other hand, played without six of her regulars the result was encouraging. Both sides played Harvard football. Head Coach Farley coached the OrOnO boys las: season. and it was there that he established his reputation as I, coach. But Maine was too light to stand up under Harvard’S great weight. and as the game progressed it began to tell on the visitors. The biggest crowd of the year wit messed the game. and the cheering was more spirited than at any time before. Maine had big aggregation and cheered continuously. Harvard had an entire substitute back field. and the absence of Wright and Knowlton as tackles and Marshall as guard made the line weak. On the defence however, the Crimson showed some improvement. On the offence the team was weak. except at the very end of the game, when the second substitute backs were put in and played with Il spirit and dash that did the coaches hearts good. Maine did NOT h:iN weak team. D1lt she was too light to stand up against Harvard’s big men. In the line, how ever. Maine outplayed Harvard at sew eral points. In the back field the Orono team was weak, and failed to make her distance many times. she was forced to punt a great deal, but had no one who could kick well. Dor ticos failed to get the ball away for more than 80 yards, While Stiilman punted for Harvard at least so and sometimes IS yards This told in the first half. for the game resolved itself into a punting contest. Maine played her best in this half, and once held the Crimson for downs. She tried several tricks, but Harvards ends were too quick and nipped them i’ll the bud in every case. II was a game with few features. Piper blocked kick in the second half and ran 80 yards for a touchdown. Later Ives ran Il kick back in beau tiful style for 40 yards. Knowles also got around the end in fine style for 80 wards. and put Cole out with ms straight arm in u sensational manner. The lineup HARVARD L. OF NJ.
