It was the 34th victory for the Irish since their last defeat. Michigan State, an inspired but outplayed team, pushed across two touchdowns on desperation passes in the closing minutes to score the most points Notre Dame has yielded In a single afternoon since the 1927 squeak past Purdue in the last seasons opener. This isn’t grippe on my part because my column is being neglected by these amateur and semi-pro clubs, but it is my answer to the repeated question that is asked mewhy don’t the fans support sports in Hagerstown?” Although Navy didn’t win their game against Tulane on Saturday, they fought the highly favored Tulane team on even terms all the way, with the game ending in a 81 81 tie If Navy had a schedule like Army, they unquestionably would be up near the top in rank, but the Annapolis middies and their coaches don’t choose their spots, but take on all Corners regardless. That’s why I’ve always been a Navy rooter and always will be. Upsets continued in the college ranks on Saturday, and noticeable among them was Virginia’s terrific upset of Penn, by score of 26–14, to keep their unbeaten record for the year intact. Notre Dame, as was expected, was too strong for Michigan State, al though the State boys put up a ter rife battle, particularly in the fourth quarter when they scored two of their three touchdowns, the final score being 34–21. Army went up against Fordham, but according to the radio report of the game, it was more of back alley scrap than a football game, and it certainly is to be regretted that football players should lose their tempers to such an extent that it was necessary for the officials to call more penalties for out and out roughness than has been called in any other game all year. Another surprising upset was the 27–27 tie in the Southern Methodist Texas ARM game, in which S. NJ u. was an overwhelming favorite. Down south the highly favored Tennessee Vols were soundly whip ped by Georgia Tech 30–13, and in another terrific upset Wake Forest really slapped Duke down to the tune of 27–7 Back in our own home state the Terrapins of Maryland University had an easy time with George Wash ington, and Jim Tatum’s boys, who are tied for the Southern Confer ence lead, get their toughest assign ment of the season next Saturday when they go against the strong Boston University team. And if they get by with that one = and l think they will-they should go through the rest of the season with out loss, to give them their best year under Tatum After Sunday afternoons game, in which the Washington Redskins, through the medium of three touchdown splurge in the fourth beat Pittsburgh 27–14, George Marshall, president of the club, announced that the contract of their coach, John E. Whelchel, had been cancelled by mutual consent, and that Herman Ball, who has been acting as scout for the team, would take over the job of manager for the rest of the season.
