Doak Walker Kicks Extra Point TO Bring Mustangs Triumph DALLAS. Oct. 29.-All-America Doak Walker came off the bench for another golden moment today, kicking the extra point that brought Southern Methodist a breath taking 7–6 victory over Texas in the last quarter. Appearing in only IL plays and obviously weak young man as the result of a siege of influenza the great Walker was the man when the time came. Kyle Rote, great Southern Methodist halfback. had taken a pass and skipped to the touchdown that tied the score. It was 6–6 only because Raleigh Blakeley Southern Methodist Wingman. had crashed through to block RAN dali Clay’s try for point. Then the hushed throng of $4,000 watched Walker as he stood there and aimed at the Texas goal posts. Back came the ball and Walker stepped into it. The oval sailed like a bird between the cross-bars. That was the ball game, although Texas had the crowd in Mysteries with drive after drive that carried deep. deep into Southern Methodist territory. Texas stormed and passed. get ting to the Southern Methodist g. yard line with six minutes to. go, but down here Ray Borneman, keyman in the Longhorn drive, fumbled and Grover Walker recovcred for S. M. U. Rote doomed kick out to the Southern Methodist “a and then Texas. stymied in three tries, tried a field goal. It was forlorn effort. On the 39-yard mark, Ben Tompkins put his foot into the ball but it didn’t even reach the goal line. Southern Methodist was out played in everything except the score. Most of the breaks went it’s way and when Texas did get one it couldn’t crack the S. M. u. line or fooled away it’s chance.

BEHIND HOME PLATE With the Hagerstown High School Hubs being rained out in last weeks game with Fort Hill in Cumberland, they have had two full weeks in which to get ready for the game at the stadium tomorrow night with the Montgomery-Blair School eleven of Silver Spring, and I’m looking for Mel Henry’s boys to rack up their second win of the season. The Hubs have had pretty tough schedule for a young team, and al though they have lost their last four games, they have been far from dis graced in any of them. From all l have been able to hear about the Silver Spring boys, while they will be tough, they should not give the Hubs too much trouble. College football passed the half way mark on Saturday, and this time there were not SO many up sets. At our own University of Mary land, the boys had an easy time beating South Carolina AT, and of course, as was expected, Notre Dame romped over the Navy 400, with the Annapolis lads giving every thing they had in the first quarter, but then being overwhelmed by the superiority of the great Notre Dame team. While the score of the Tennessee win over North Carolina (35–6) was unexpected, l wasn’t bit surprised that Coach highlands squad took North Carolina into camp. To me the North Carolina team is just an other proof that when there is one outstanding star on team-in N. Cardinals case, “Choo Choo” Justice they don’t have much chance if the star player is bottled up, and Neyland is a past master at doing Just that The two most exciting games of the day were Pittsburgh’s 1921 win over Pennsylvania and Southern Methodist’s 7–6 win over Texas. Both games were packed with thrills for the entire four quarters, and it was only fitting that in the South Methodist game Doak Walker, who had been sidelined for sometime with illness and is an All American if ever there was one, kicked the extra point that won the game. Out on the coast, California clear ed a tough hurdle in its drive for the Rose Bowl when they swarm ed all over UCLA to win by score of 1921. .... This Saturday, the game l want to hear is between Navy and Tulane, and despite the fact that the experts are picking Tulane, l am looking for Navy to bounce back and once more get into the win column. Congratulations to the Smithsburg team in the Washington County League on winning the final game of the play-offs with Williamsport on Sunday. Although, when the series started Williamsport was heavy favorite they proved to be no match for the winners. And the final game was never in doubt. Now all that remains to wind up the best season the league has ever held under the presidency of Paul Macy, is the annual banquet, the date of which will be announced by Paul in the near future.
