BEARS GET PAWS INTO ROSE BOWL SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 31-R- Californias Bears have one paw in the Rose Bowl. Only the most thun- dering upsets now can prevent their return to the country’s No. foot gall classic Jan. 2. Lynn Waldorf’s team hurdled its second biggest obstacle of the sea- son last week with convincing 35–21 victory over it’s southern cousin, the University of California at Los Angeles. The other tough one was the University of Southern California, a 16–10 victim two weeks age California is the only unde- feated, united club in the coast conference. The balance of its schedule is favorable. Washington State next weekend should provide not much more than workout. Tne same goes for oregon Nov. 12. Stan- ford, in the season windup Nov. 19, may offer an argument of major proportions. BEARS FOR ROSE BOWL The Bears from Berkeley went to the Rose Bowl last New Years Day. They lost to Northwestern. There seems little doubt they will make the trip again. The Big Ten team for the postseason classic is yet undetermined. It may be Ohio State, currently tied with Iowa for the lead in that conference. Whichever club comes out must be prepared to contend with Bob Celeri. He’s the boldest T-forma- tion quarterback they’ve seen out this way in many year. Celeri does the unexpected even when it is expected. DOZEN PASSES To help defeat UCLA, Celeri completed a dozen passes good for 230 yards. He engineered the drives to five touchdowns to beat rival team so fired up. it claimed a 14–14 tie at halftime. California has won 21 conference games in row. In fact, Coach Waldorf has lost only one league contest since he took over three seasons ago. Southern California, preseason favorite for the conference title, outscored an inspired Washington team, 4G-28 and takes on the loops enigma club, Stanford, this week end. Southern California will be fav- cred over Stanford. The latter chalked up 7–7 tie with Santa Clara in a game marked by de- fensive play. THIS WEEKEND Washington meets Oregon. Ore gon lost to Iowa 31–34 last week. Off the performance against use, Washington rates an excellent chance against Oregon. The latter was thumped by Southern Califor- mia, 40–13. Kip Taylor’s Michigan style wing lack formation finally started clicking and his Oregon State team buried Washington State under a 35–6 count. Left half Ken Carpen- ter was the big OSC gun, rushing 19o yards. oregon State, therefore, vii be favored to take Idaho Sat- urday. Idaho outpointed Univer- sity of Portland 49–21 last week. Montana belted out 34–12 de- cision over Montana State and hopes to even up a score with Eastern Washington Saturday.
