Penn State Conquers West Virginia, 21–14 STATE COLLEGE, Pa. Oct. 25.- Penn States powerful football team remained among the unbeaten today after turning back rugged West Virginia eleven, 21–14, for its fifth straight victory. A capacity crowd of $4,000 watched the Nittany Lions roar back to tie the score in a hard-fought first half and then push over one touchdown in the third period that was good enough for victory over the previously unbeaten Mountaineers. The Nittany Lions kept the West Virginians at bay in the second half with a forward line that never faltered. Francis Rogel, a sophomore from North Braddock, Pa, grabbed most of the spotlight for the Lions, scoring the games first touchdown in the opening minutes of the first period and carrying the ball for net gain of lit yards on 16 plays. Elwood Petchel, with two success sive kicks that went out of bounds on West Virginia’s 81 was another sparkplug for the Lions, while Clarence Gorinski, another sophomore, plunged over from the 3 for the tying tally in the closing minutes of the second period. Petchel pitched a pass to Wallace Triplett that started on the West Virginia At, was caught on the 26, and the fleet Lion back swept along to the tally that meant victory for Penn State. West Virginia’s finest work came in the opening period with an aerial attack resulting in both its touch downs. The first came when Tony Keane tossed to Rex Bumsardner on the State 26 and the referee called pass interference on the play. A few moments later the same pair repeated and again interference was called, this time on States 4. Pete Zinaich plunged over for the touch down.
