ILLINOIS STUNNED BY PURDUE, 14–7 LAFAYETTE, Ind, Oct. Is CP’-An alert Purdue team never made a mistake today and knocked down an Illinois foot ball machine that had gone ten games without defeat, IA to :, before an alumni-packed crowd of $4,000 homecoming fans. Illinois, tied by Army but unbeaten since mid-season of 1916, made II first downs to Purdue’s six, but the unflustered winners made the Illini do most of their running on the wrong side OF the center stripe. Purdue’s fl e-man backfield on defense was calculated to stop Illinois top passer, Perry Moss, and while it didn’t keep him from passing for the one Illini touchdown, it knocked down most of his other losses that might have mattered. Moss reached receivers with IL OF rs passes, but the net gain was only 1873 yards, while Bob Demoss of Purdue completed four of five for So yards and set up both of his teams touch downs. Apart from Demoss’ timely passes, more effective because he called ground plays most of the afternoon, Purdue’s activities were pretty much starless.
