WESTERN GRID TEAMS TO SETTLE DOWN THIS WEEK PreIiminaries Dispensed With As Conference Games Get Under Way CHICAGO, Oct. 7.-Season openers out of the way, western conference football teams this week will prepare for the first game between confer ence contenders, four of the big 10 elevens battling each other next Sat- urday Five other 70 will be in action against conference elevens. First proof of the actual strength of the conference teams in action were obtained yesterday when all the teams of the big 10 on their home gridiron opposed non-confer- ence elevens. While most of the con- tests were intended more or less as stiff practice games for the con ference elevens, one team of the big team was defeated and several others won by narrow margins from their conference opponents. Illinois whose strength. had been problematical, sprung one of the big gest surprises of the day when the Illinois defeated Nebraska 24 to ‘, the first victory ever scored by Illinois over the Corn Huskers. In one of the other important dope” battles of the day, Chicago de- feated the Colorado Aggies, 10 to 0, in a game contested by the visitors every inch of the way and which largely through a prank of fate, Chicagos touchdown resulting from a blocked punt after which the ball rolled back over the goal line. A field goal was kicked after Chicago got the ball on a penalty. Wisconsin showed little strength In winning from ‘ to 8, although Taft. star Badger fullback and tower of strength in offense, was out of the game. Michigan, which divided honors with Iowa in the conference last sea- son exhibited a strong backfield and an almost impregnable line in down ing Case 36 to 0. Michigan’s victory proved that it will be one of the first teams of the big team. Iowa showed almost phenomenal improvement over it’s ragged form a week ago. defeating Knox A to $. Indiana was the team defeated in the big 10, losing to Depauw 8 to 0. Northwestern whose teams in former years have been noted for their sud den “streaks” of good fortune and Ill luck exhibited some of the tend encies in winning it’s 21 to victory over Beloit. Northwestern showed an attack and defense that at times was almost brilliant and at other simes seemed badly in need or polsn- ing up. Ohio State, always a dangerous team in the conference, had little trouble in disposing of Ohio Wes- leyan at Columbus, 24 to ‘. It’s form Of attack and the strength indicated 1t will be formidable opponent for any conference team that faces it. Next Saturday Indiana and Norrn- western met at Indianapolis with Northwestern having the edge and Purdue and Iowa met at Iowa. the Hawkeyes having the edge on res ords so far this season. Michigan meets Vanderbilt at Ann Arbor. Ohio State plays Colgate at Columbus Wisconsin meets the Michigan Aggies at Madison; Illinois faces Butler lT urpana and Minnesota meets the Haskell Indians at Minneapoliss
