NEBRASKA ELEVEN DOWNS FAMED NOTRE DAME, A TO 7 Noble Is Big Star In Corn huskers Sensational Victory Over MickS LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. 10-(By As sociated Press.)-Nebraska’s football team beat Notre Dame this after noon, IA to ‘. The team that humbled the Army, Princeton and Georgia Tech found it’s end runs, it’s off-tackle plays and it’s line ,smashes impotent before the heavier Nebraska line, and the Corn husker backs broke up or intercepted forward passes at critical points with a regularity that nipped at it’s incep- tton almost eveIy aerial assault. The Nebraskans scored at the start of the second quarter and again at the beginning of the last period, with Dave Noble, husky halfback, carry ing the ball both times. The first touchdown came when Noble broke through his right tackle and ran 24 yards across the Notre Dame goal. and the second followed a 15-yard pass from Ruefeus Dewitz, Nebraska fullback, which Noble caught on the enemys 5-yard line and carried over with a tackler on his back. Herb Dewitz added one point after touch down and his brother the other-both on place kicks. Notre Dames touchdown came in the final moments, after the only consistently successful Notre Dame passing attack of the game. Cerney, substitute for LaYden, crossed the Nebraska goal after catching a short pass from Stuhldreher from the Huskers’ 40-yard line. Neither team could gain on straight football in the first quarter and the contest became a tight bunting duel between Lewellyn and Layden. Dewitz Runs 25 Yards. Nebraska gained an advantage when Herb Dewitz returned a Notre Dame punt 25 yards. When Layden punted out of bounds deep in his own territory, toward the end of the pe- riod, the stage was set for Nebras- lxa’s touchdown, which came on the fourth play of the second quarter. The second Cornhusker touchdown came on the third play of the last quarter, after Nebraska had marched down the field from Notre Dame’s 42-yard line to the 19-yard line. Coach Rockne of Notre Dame be- gan to substitute freely in the third period and Dawson of Nebraska fol- lowed suit, so that hardly half a dozen of the men who started were in the game when Notre Dame tall lied. Nebraska, conceded before the con- test only an outside chance to win, played magnificent football. The line, with the advantage of weight, sell dom permitted the Notre Dame backs to gain through it, and attempts to circle the ends netted little. Notre Dame resorted to passes early in the game, but Captain Lewellyn and his backfteld mates knocked down or in- tercepted the ball too frequently for the foe to gain consistently. Most of the 15 passes completed by Notre Dame were good for only slight yard = age. Nebraska completely only one pass, that on which Noble scored, but its losses were never intercepted in | dangerous territory. Rhodes Runs 67 Yards. In the third quarter. Rhodes, Ne- braska left end, grabbed a Notre Dame tumble and ran CT yards to Notre Dame’s gola line. where he dropped the ball as he was tackled from behind and Grove, at end for | Notre Dame, recovered for a touch back. Noble was. of course, Nebraska 8 star, but his touchdowns were made possible by the faultless functioning of the line and gains of his back field mates. Don Miller at right halfback, was Notre Dame’s bright est light. particularly at receiving passes. The Notre Dame line, led my Captain Bryan and Oberst, battered fiercely but the Nebraska forwards were too heavy and toe shifty l It was Notre Dame’s first defeat since Nebraska’s IA to victory over Rockne’s men in 1922, which, inciden- tally. was Notre Dame’s only defeat of that season. | Score by periods: | Nebraska ........... z 6 7–14 l Notre Dame ......... o 0 0 7- 2 | Nebraska scoring: Touchdowns: Noble CD.
