Penn Prevents Defeat BY Last Minute Rally Quakers’ Thrilling Offensive Snatches Victory From Dartmouth and Ties Game IA to 14-Aeral Attack Makes Contest Spectacular frantic clutch after another until he had reached the sideline thirty yards from the goal. The rest was simple AS the game advanced Dartmouth found increasing difficulty in ploughing through Penn’s line and time and again was forced to punt on the last down. Burke’s injury was costly. The Dart mouth attack did not look az powerful once he had to leave the game in the third period. Penn. too could not gain consistently through the line or around end, but Wray’s elusive running back of kicks. his speed on end runs and the general excellence of the aerial attacs kept the Red and Blue in the running. The first attack that was sustained for any length Of time came three NM utes after the opening of the game, when Dartmouth. starting from It’s 10 yard line. advanced seventy yards. Dur ing the march Dartmouth was penalzed twice for an Illegal shift Burke’s plunges through the line and Robert sons swift runs off tackle forced the Penn line back, however. On the 70 yard line the Quaker resistance stiff fened and after two plays had been thrown for losses Robertson tried a for ward pass that Dern intercepted. Penn was soon forced to yield the ball again. being compelled to punt after failure 10 gain through the line. On a series of line piunges and two delayed pass plays the Green advanced again, but once beyond rnidfield was halted. After Robertson had kicked over tho goal line Penn put the ball in play on the 20-yard line and punted on the second play Three first downs in success sion brought the ball to the Penn 22-yard line, when the period ended. The First score. On a delayed pass Robertson gained II yards when play was resumed. Burke then made it first down again on PENIS yard line and Robertson was catapulted over for the first touchdown. He kicked goal. On the next kickoff Wray ran the ball back in scintillatng style to the 35 yard line. but Penn could accompllsh little and was forced to kick. again the attack broke down and Rob ertson tried a field goal from the 43 yard line that went wide of the mark. PENIS first touchdown came on the second play following. After Hamer had hit centre for 6 yards, Wray called for a forward pass, and heaved it to Miller, who shook off tacklers and raced 60 yards to the Dartmouth goal. Wray kicked goal and the score was tied. There was no further scoring in the half, neither side being able TO sustain its attack. Once Dartmouth fumbled at midfield and Wray followed with run around left end for 10 yards. Pos Miller added off tackle and then Wray broke away again for yards. But there the threat vanished. Failing to make any Roadway, Penn tried n field goal, but Smullin’s attempt proved failure. the ball rolling out of bounds on Dart mouths 10 yard line. Dartmouth, too. failed to gain. and after Robertson had punted to Penn’s AZ yard line the half ended. Although the third period produced no score It was marked by the hardest playing and the most desperate tackling Of the game. Time out had to be taken time and again after players had been hurt and there were frequent penalties for offside. Just before he had to retir e from the game Burke pioughed through PENIS line for twenty-five yards, ana then Il pass from Robertson to Gordon retted fifteen more yards, but on the next play Miller intercepted u forward pass. Penn made two first downs on passes and then lost the ball on’downs on Dartmouth’s % yard line. RObertson Almost breaks Clear. q who replaced Burke. was good for twenty yards but Hamer intercepted the next Dartmouth fling on PENIS % yard line. Just before the end OF the period. after an exchange Of punts. | Robertson almost broke clear of the field but after travelling twenty-five yards little Rex Wray brought him TO n stop. In the final period Dartmouth. after ...a marched thirty-five yards and, then lost the ball on Watson’s tumble. Shortly afterward Siegfried, who had replaced Hoag, intercepted pass and sprinted thirty-five yards for the touchdown that apparently spelled Penns defeat.
