Penn Defence Riddled by Powerful Cornell Attack Ihacans Soften Memory of Past Defeats by Trouncing Rivals II to 0-Kaw, Elusive and Daring, Stars on Shiny Gridiron, Special DESPATCH TO THE NEW York HERALp. PHILApELPHIA, Nov. 24.-Big red team is more than a courtesy title for the Cornell football team this year. in reality this afternoon. Big and red and fast and strong, and they not only riddled the outolassed eleven Of tho University of Pennsylvania but ran rings and loops and all sorts OF circuituous fights around that i’ll starred organization. The Comedians softened the memory Of many past and bitter defeats by winning Al to o. The lads from Cayuga water made six touchdowns, and made one or more in every period They made two in the first. two in the second, one in the third, one In the fourth. Every quarter was laden with reprisal for Cornell, and the one sided score was due as much to the fact that Cornell was team OF speed. of ability of the runners TO stay up in Shiny footing, quick and well knit interference, a team splendidly drilled and of well distributed strength as to Penn weakness. Penn was weak and full of futile endeavor, but Cornell was a strong team able to make the most Of that weakness. A soggy field and one which BECAME soggier was what the athletes had and grimy mud coated lot they We’re at the finish. They donned dry uniforms between halves, but quickly the dry ones were wet and black with sticky mud. Tho field was wet when the game began and rain throughout the second half made It worse When the Ithacans couldn’t hold their feet In the ooze they slid, and whenever they slid they slid two or three yards nearer to their opponents’ goal. Field Is Treacherous. The field was so soft and treacherous that by way of novelty the Quakers often requisitioned clean dry towel as a resting place for the ball TO be put in play, but Cornell got along famously without any artificial aids. The Ithacans handled the ball beautifully, ably, greasy though 1t was, gave their ruprers good protection with plentiful inter. once, tackled sharply and accurately. demonstrated that they belong among the football elite and altogether played a slashing game in the meanest sort OF weather and conditions. On dry field Cornell, with greater strength, the fast running of their backs and their skill in long gain runs. would have won BY a larger score. They had in Kaw n halfback who to-day played one of the most spirited running games of the year. The running and onward travelling generally of this robust chap We’re fine. He ran the ends fast and hard, always assisted by a big company of interferers, sweeping like q phalanx. lie turned into openings between end and tackle with as little effort as a spin ming top he was as slippery as snake in aquirming loose from tacllers and he always added yards by diving or sliding or in some unstoppable. get there way projecting himself, head first preferably. feet first IL need be, to the furthermost point. Penn’s game was rendered moro help less by q pronounced knack of losing ground from her own passing from centre. The total yards gained by the Quakers was sixty, and they actually lost seventeen more yards than they gained One reason for this was poor passing from centre and fumbling, another was repeated breaking through by Cornell linemen and smearing the play in the muck back oe the scrimmage line. Cornell Gains 43O Yards. With Kaw to lead the attack and do most gaining, including dashes all the way from five yards to forty; with Iechler to smite the line, low and catapultic; with Pfann and Ramsey to add their insignificant quota, Cornell made approxims tely 430 yards by multitude of intertwined flights afoot along the slushy gridiron. Penn’s line was quite outplayed, with excellent end play by AIunns and Cassidy Of Cornell, and Cor nell’s backfield was better individually and as an organization, though Miller and Wray tlnged the mist and the fog with some fast, plucSy and colorful work. BY way of change from numerous drab years the Cornell host had chance TO cheer and sing with IN exultant note, and rain soaked though they were they enjoyed every saturated second of it. Cornell scored early and often, and the Cornell cheers were soon reverberating through the fog banks. There were 10000 spectators and 20,- 600 umbrellas, an oblong anlphitheatrc cf black and dripping mushrooms. The players steamed In the murlSy gray fore ground, but despite all that sodderr ess the place was hot with bright contrasts Of color Nature was not in harmony with the gay colors of the rival bands. the cheer leaders and partisans. but The red and the blue of feathers and arm bands and miscellaneous finery slashed tho sullen background all the mora vividly.
