SYRACUSE ELEVEN BEATS DARTMOUTH Orange Crashes Way to Vie tory in Fourth Period, IA to z. SCORE FROM FUMBLES Breaks Give Each a Touch down in Battle at the Polo Grounds. SCORE FROM FUMBLEs Polo Grounds yesterday afternoon to an embattled, game eleven from Han over which stood over it’s own goal line, struggling desperately against determined foe from Syracuse. Hold ‘em, Dartmouth” Now it became a thunderous importantly to scrappy combination which, with the score a tie at to 7, was threatened by an in furiated antagonist. Syracuse was only two yards from a second touch down. That Dartmouth team needed n. entreaty 1t fought and fought-and 1t held! One Syracuse punch yielded nothing, two more mad lunges into the green mass gained only a little more than a yard. Fourth down, and only one foot to go-but Dartmouth stood as stanch and stalwart as the old White Mountains which look down on Hanover. The fourth blow found Dartmouth resolute with a strength it had not shown all season. lost the ball on downs. But Dartmouth was defeated after ALL and not long after that fine stand which 1llumned the closing moments of the third period and the first minute CT the final quarter. Syracuse. well deserving OF the triumph, went smashing twenty five yards for touchdown and won over the Green aggregation by ID to z Thus was the glory of that defensive feat of Dartmouth submerged in defeat--defeat by Syracuse eleven, which, coming out OF It’s tndefiniteness and indecision, suduenly became brilliant and irresistible. Each Scores on tumble. Until Babe” Frugone, who was developed at Manual Training in Brook lyn. went crashing and smashing his way toward the Dartmouth goal Inc in The closing period and put the ball in position for Anderson to go hurtling over for touchdown it was a close, hard fought if not brilliant contest in which each side scored on a break These Observation-Disclosures at naught the urexpected strength which the rivals had developed in defence. Syracuse went to the fore in the second period, went to the front with q dazzling performance by MacRae. This young comet in blue Jersey went scooting over sixty yards of rain soaked turf, sixty long yards of the heaviest of going. and touched the ball down behind the Dartmouth goal line. A tumble by the great Robertson, who was hampered by very poor pass, provided MacRae with an opportunity to emulate Prince tons famous Sam White. Zimmerman kicked goal. and the Orange was in the ascendant over the Green. to o. But not for long was Syracuse in the van. Dame Fortune this time decided to play no favorites. Having given Syracuse a tumble to carry away for a score she contrived to provide a similar opportunity for the White Indians. In the third period Kellogg of Syracuse let punt glide through his fingers. Lynch scurried up in the nick of time, seized the bounding ball and dashed thirty-five yards for touchdown. Neidlinger kicked the goal, and now 1t was z to 7-even in score, even in the fruits OF fortune even in the cheering, which now came in flood for both elevens. a game which had dragged along under the weight of inept offensive tactics and poor generalship now became tense and highly interesting. The FrugOne HOmeric. F’rugones Homeric of resistless power was highly dramatic. His smashing sue cess came like bolt out OF the blue for the Dartmouth team. Kellogg, Zimmerman, Foster. the dashing Anderson-all had failed to find spot through which they could score vital gains. With that failure to cross the Green’s final chalk mark at the opening of the fourth pc nj nd So IL. nothing which even resembled continuity of attack. There were gains spasmodic. uncertain. But no gains when gains would have counted most. Frugone had not started the game. He was listed as substitute quarter back, and Anderson was doing we’ll enough. When Syracuse found itself on Dartmouth’s two yard mark Frugone suddenly was rushed into the fight in place of Foster. But Frugone had no hand in the futile assault on the Green. kellogg and Zimmerman bore the brunt OF that fierce drive. Then Syracuse, stopped at this angle, stopped at that, desperate. determined to win, hurled the burden on the willing back of the youth from Brooklyn. After Dartmouth had taken the bali on downs Robertson went behind his own goal line TO punt out of danger-and he kicked poorly. Syracuse got the ball on Dart mouths rs yard line--and now came the winning drive. Now the 6 Ill to Frugone-a substitute quarter, who was to become a star halfback. First Anderson got the ball and me made three yards Then Frugone became the bearer of the Syracuse message. He went smashing on for four yards. Once more was Frugone asked to carry the leather and he went crash 1ng for four more--four and a first down. while Syracuse rooters made that adium hum. Frugone Goes IL More. One more call was to be made on Frugone. He had made one first down and now Syracuse implored him for an other. And Babe came through. A terrific assault was organized on the left side of the Dartmouth line. Smash ing pressure was brought to bear on the centre, the guard and the tackle and under tremendous effort, particularly by Gulick, the Orange captain. the Green bulwark buckled. 1t sagged, bent tten broke as Frugonc went dashing through for twelve yards--and that Sec ond first down. Now Syracuse was in a position to strike again. Now came that call to Dartmouth anew---that call TO “hold ‘em.” But Dartmouth men sitting COM fortably In the left field bleachers were asking too much. kellogg and Andcrson hit the Dartmouth right and Syracuse was threatening again--only two yards from touchdown. In several of the most critical stages or the game he was not in the line up, and his absence left a hole COM parable to that which was shot into the Yankees front when Babe Ruth was forced out. The game marked the final appear ance of both teams on the gridiron this year, and was Jim Robertsons farewell to the sport. For that reason hundreds of otherwise neutral fans were shouting for Dartmouth victory.
