Does Not Reveal It’s Best Form in Beating Williams, 90 to @. O’HEARN FLASHES SPEED Lives Up to Reputation as He Directs New Haven Eleven. team this afternoon showed about as much as it cared to show and won by about as much as it wanted to win. At only rare intervals in the game with the eleven from Williams did the Ellis let loose and develop their top speed. There was an intense effort to eliminate rough edges, to attain rhythm and smoothness rather than grea, scoring power But with all that the Yale combination managed to put score into each quarter and defeated the Purple by 23 to 0. There was a touchdown by Beckett in the first period. touchdown by the brilliant Aldrich in the second quarter, field goal by that same streak session. and then a final crossing of the Williams goal line by the flashy O’Hearn in the last period. From two Of the touchdowns goals were kicked. Those who came expecting to see Yale flash little Of the stuff which they think will be hurled against the Army here next Saturday were greatly disappointed And il is more than likely that the Blue will fight the Cadets with little more than 1t fought the scrappy team from the BerlSshires this afternoon. The Els used the old fashioned smash off tackle, an occasional slam at the pivot, just enough forward passes to vary the monotony of the exhibition and generous dash of the kicking game. Their defence was intelligent and snappy. williams Not Advanced. Williams was not quite as we’ll prepared for the contest as had been expected, from the standpoint OF an advanced and varied attack. The team coached by Percy Wendell OF Harvard used little more than a Harvard eleven would have used in its third game OF he season There was a marked lack of that late season stuff which most minor teams are sure to try when they meet major opponents in early campaign battles. The meagreness OF the Williams running attack was particularly surprising With scouts from West Point. Prince ton and Cambridge. not to mention way stations. giving .heir closest attention 20 the work Of the Yale players, Ii was Gpparen. from the start that the Ellis were checking tendency to pass GER tain limit set by Tad Jones. But the Yale mainstays, Aldrich. cHearn, Jordan and young man by the name of Wight who came into the clash in the third period could not help giving most Impressive exhibitions of speed and ‘pwer, certainly more dash and alert ness than the Blue showed at this time | last season. 1t was only with its forward pass that | Williams at all bothered Yale. A couple Of filings played major role in sending Die visitors to Yale’s eleven yard mark y the second quarter. and that eleven | lard mark was the limit of Williams’s | Progress for the afternoon. In The ..i.rd | auarter the eleven from Williamstown | managed to work its way 10 the Blues | twenty-five yard line. At that stage Jones rushed the scntil iating O’Hearn into the game, and let | us say that the newcomer made his pres ence felt Immediately. He put more pepper into the defence. he speeded up the attack so far that the brakes had 10 be put on. No sooner had he replaced Beckett than he crashed into Williams mass. intercepted a forward pass and killed off what looked like possible adj vance toward the Yale goal line. Aerial Attack Threatens. Just before OHearn came in the Will iams boys were having a high old time with their aerial attack Mallon threw one pass to Pease which netted thirty three yards and put the Purple on the Blues SO yard line. right after that came a pass which failed, but in a thrice another toss came from Mallon to HeaIy for ten yards. Burger made yard through the left side and the Williams contingent roared. But O’Hearn reduced that roar to hoarsc whisper. This man OHearn is the real goods. He Is streak. a great runner through a broken field. a smart and fast carrier in reversing. q quick diagnoser OF the op- POSITIONS defence. He carries himself even better than did kempton In his good days. O’Hearn knows how to keep his feet. His excellence is not confined to the offensive. He seems to be quite as effective on defence. AS for his qualities as general they still are to be determined. He used only a very few plays to-day and there was no call for any fine quality of judgment in their cnOlcc- Vale started out to make the game quite an open affair. In the first period IT tried three forward passes and worked two of them with splendid effect. One went for gain of 25 yards Then a pass was intercepted On top OF that the Ellis completed a pass for % yards. Jordan was on the throwing end. All that while Williams was trying out its running game and shot only one pass, which grounded. In the second period Yale isca rded the pass and sogan to oil up its rushing department.. Early in the period AID rich tried toss and IL was Intercepted. williams completed two passes I’m that quarter, one for yards and one for a ione yard The third period saw Yale , throw Just orc pass and gain s yards thereby. This was the big aerial session for the Purple. II tried eight passes and gained on only two of them. four fell TO the turf, two were intercepted one brought 80 yards and the other H. and . O’Hearn on the scene. The fourth period saw Yale gain 20 yrrds on one pass. 10 on another, ground one and throw another into the hands 1 OF a Williams man.
