One yard needed. Crystal Springs’ Johnnie Daniels took 48.

Tulane needed one yard to keep Memphis from getting the ball back. Johnnie Daniels gave the Green Wave 48—and a touchdown.

With Tulane holding a 23–17 lead late on October 16, Daniels broke free on fourth-and-one near midfield. His scoring run and the following two-point conversion sealed a 31–17 win.

Daniels came from Crystal Springs, Mississippi, and Crystal Springs High School, where he played for Tim McNair. His college route went through Copiah-Lincoln and Mississippi State before Tulane. The Green Wave’s biography records 4,407 rushing yards in high school. Friday’s decisive burst was much shorter, but it delivered exactly what Tulane needed: the end of Memphis’s comeback.
