Gio Lopez joined the school that had beaten his previous team. By October, the quarterback from Madison, Alabama, was driving Wake Forest past another North Carolina rival.
The James Clemens High School graduate threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns, then added a rushing score, in Wake Forest’s 38–14 win at NC State on October 10. The Deacons trailed 14–10 at halftime. Lopez finished by completing his last 13 passes.
His route ran through South Alabama and North Carolina before Wake Forest. The Madison County Record reported his move to the Deacons in January, after a season starting for the Tar Heels. This time, he was directing the second-half surge: Wake Forest outscored NC State 28–0 after the break.
