Erik Sandvik came to Wyoming with an unusual résumé for a college kicker: just two field-goal attempts in high school. His sports in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, included soccer and skiing.
He walked on at Wyoming in 2023 and waited behind John Hoyland. On October 9, 2026, the Steamboat Springs High School graduate made a 21-yard field goal in overtime to beat San Jose State 16–13. It was Wyoming’s first win in San Jose since 1996.
The winner was short. The route to becoming the player trusted to take it was longer. Sandvik made all three of his field goals that night and stood eight-for-eight on the season afterward. A kid from a ski town had given the Cowboys their finish.
