  west virginia HAS Strong 1917 eleven Victories Over Navy and Carlisle Proves Class of Morgan town Team. OF all the football games that were played on Saturday-and there were upward Of hundred of them-three stood out as distinct surprises. They were the Carlisle-West Virginia, SYRIA cuse-Rutgers and Williams-Cornell debates. And of these surprises the biggest one was the outcome of the clash between the Indians and West Virginia. After the showing West Virginia made against the navy the week previous. when 1t defeated the midshipmen. IL was expected that the South erners would put the Indians to a Sc we’re test, but it must be admitted that a defeat for Carlisle was not , anticipated. West Virginia defeated Carlisle by a score of q to 0, which is a decisive trimming. to say the least. As a result OF its games against the Navy. the Indians, West Virginia must be accorded a place in the fore rank Of football eleyens to date this season. The Southerners have proven their class beyond rebuttaL Rutgers journeyed to Syracuse TO tackle the Salt City team. Instead Rutgers was tackled. Reports from New Brunswick this autumn had led to the belief that john Foster San ford, head coach. had succeeded in whipping his material into a GOOD football machine. The l4-to-0 defeat by Syracuse does not refute these reports. but, IL Sanford has a real foot ball team, then Syracuse must have a ccrker. An upset OF no meagre proportions was scored by Ithaca when the VIII liams College team defeated Cornell by a 14-to-10 tally. Cornell has been severely Handicapped by the enlist ment Of veteran players in the differ ent branches Of government service. but Williams, too. has suffered. and. while a hard game was looked for. the ultimate outcome was more or less of decided jar. not to say shock. That the University of Pittsburgh has another scoring machine was ! shown by the total OF IL points ii ran UP against Lehigh. However. the Pittsburghers were scored upon TO tn extent of 10 points. 1t Is still very early in the season; in fact, Saturday was really the real start of the autumnal campaign on the gridiron and much improvement can be looked for in the next few weeks. for a majority of the teams got away to a late start this year.

  CARLISLE INDIANS PLAY HERE TOMORROW Redskins Are Strong And May Give Middies A Tussle FIRST VISIT IN YEARS They Held Powerful West Virginia Eleven ScOreless For Three Periods Last Week For the first time in number of years, the football team of Carlisle Indians Will invade the lair of the Midshipmen tomorrow for a contest on the gridiron. and the greatest in terest is being shown in the game. not only because OF the fact that the willy Redskins always attract great crowd of spectators but also because the Indians are reported to be stronger than in recent years. and therefore, the Naval contingent is viewing the result of the game with more or less uncertainty. The Indian eleven is said 20 be composed entirely of young players this season, but are heavy and strong, and with lots of speed in their play. That they may be able TO make the game with the Middies a warm con test is indicated by the fact that ON last Saturday they, for three periods, held the powerful West Virginia University machine scOreless But i’m the final period the West Virginians ripped things open and succeeded in scoring three touchdowns before the final whistle. and the score was 81 TO O. A week prior to that the Mid dies managed to hold the Mountain GERS to a seven-point score. Com parative scores do not cut and figure in football, however. and tomorr0w’s affray ought to develop into a pretty good tussle. Coach Gilmour Dobie expoets such will be the case, and dur ing practice this week he has been pointing his charges TO meet the In dians’ attack. The Middies will present about the same lineup as on last Saturday, when they buried the Maryland State eleven under a 62 10 n score
