MACHINE AGAIN AFTER TITLE of Being Leading Eastern Football Eleven. DARTMOUTH GAINS FAME Light Hanover Eleven Brings Hops BY Defeat of Strong West Virginia Outfit. The fast Colgate eleven which care ried off the Eastern gridiron cham pfonship last season is again pointed toward that honor. While 1t is early yet to come to conclusions of sound value. Hamilton college has shown the same sort of talent that won II a rlace at the top year ago. Saturday, the Colgate team swamped Cornell 20 to 0 and. while Cornell must not be judged by the high standards of for mer years, Colgate’s victory was new ertheless impressive. Last year Coach Bankart had a oackheld at Colgate which was drilled almost as perfectly as four men can De drilled. There were Clio, Spencer. Hubbeli and Anderson. Colgate, this year, has this same seasoned back field, with the exception of Quarter back Anderson, whose place is being capably filed by Mcbride. Mcbride has shown the same excellent quail ties as Anderson with surprising sue cess for new player. Colgate’s coach this year Is Harry McDeayitt. an old Dartmouth player, who seems to be carrying on. the plans which were so successfully laid by Bankart. Wooster Is being groom ed to take Vests place as a kicker, and the line includes woodman. who was substitute for West last season; CARROLL, last years substitute center, and Castalanes, who was one of the best endss In the game last season These are some of the reasons that Colgate Is likely to repeat last years success. Cornelrs showing thus far has been a sorry disappointment. and It is doubtful II Coach Sharpe Will be able to overcome the handicap of the loss of so many of last years talent through enlistmA ants 1t is, however. to CornelIs credit that those who are tinue football in spite of the fact that the available material In below nor NAL. The overwhelming football machine Glenn Warner has built up at Fits burg continued on its crushing way by beating Syracuse rs to 0. Warner has again demonstrated that he Is one OF the ~@ses. offensive coaches. Sad there will probably be no eleven this season which viii Se able to boast of the scoring ability of Pfttsburg. In McLaren P;ttsburg has q veteran full back who ranks with the best. and Judging from Pittsburg’s work up to the present time. there seems to be little difference between this years team and the powerful elevens Warner has coached during the last two years. The forward pass has again become the most frequently used scoring play this season. AS much as some of the older coaches object to it’s use. this weapon of attack has become essen tial to the successful eleven. 1t Ia still a dangerous play. but a. pretty one to watch when skilifulIy played. When 1t fails 1t is much like the squeeze play in baseball flat dis appointment. The play, however, has developed an alertness among players and an uncanney perception at follow ing the ball which makes football far more interesting than ever before.
