VIRGINIA MEETS DEFEAT AT HANDS OF HARVARD TEAM Mahan’s Three Field Goals Down the Southerners. Neither Side Strong on Offensive Cambride, Mass, October l5.--Cap, tain Edward Mahan of Harvard proved himself a worthy successor to Captain Charles Brickley by personally defeat ing the University of Virginia today g to by three field goals, one from the <2-yard line. The Nirginians proved less formid- able than was anticipated from their 10 to 0 defeat of Yale two weeks ago. They had little in the way of an of- fense which Harvard did not fathom in the first period, but their defense stiffened as it retreated and twice threw back the Crimson tide inside the five-yard line. Both teams began raggedly. Before Harvard woke up to the visitors of- fense the ball was twice within kick ing distance of the Crimson goal, but in each case Right Guard Thurman failed by yards A third attempt was blocked The Harvard offense got under way in the second period for a 53-yard march to Virginia’s three-yard line. This was the longest and most con- sistent gain made. Virginia prevented touchdown and Mahan dropped his first goal from the 15-yard line. The southerners were on the offensive thereafter but they kept Harvard we’ll back and compelled Mahan to take his second shot standing on the 42-yard line. In the fourth period Mahan aimed another kick accurately and scored from the 2S-yard line. few minutes before play ended Harvard worked the ball again to Vir- ginia’s three- yard line, only to lose 1t on downs. Thurman’s kicking was feature. One of his kicks travelled 60 yards be- fore it struck the ground. Lineup and summary: Harvard–Souchy, left end; R. C. Coleman’s Gridiron Warriors on the l0-yard Line. / cambridge. Oct. lS.-All hail to the new king Of Harvard. Drop-kick Edward w. Mahan. whose powerful right leg boosted the Crimson into a 9-to-o vic tory over the scrappy Virginia team in the stadium this afternoon. Thrice did the Harvard rushers plant the ball within pcgging distance of the Southerners’ goal. when Mahan was called upon for his little scoring spcciality. one Of the boosts being driven over the Virginia’s 45-yard line. Capt. Harry Coleman’s team gave Harward the toughest kind of struggle. and during the first period matters looked decidedly gloomy for the home team The Southerners. however. could not pierce the Harvard defense. but through an exchange of kicks planted themselves in range for two attempts for field goals. one by Thurman falling short and an other by Berkeley being blocked by Harte. The only real rushing OF the game was chronicled in the second period when Harvard. using Mahan and whitney, smashed their way 30 yards to the 10 yard mark. where Virginia held, and Mahan Strengthened out his first kick from the 15-yard line. This drive came shortly after Thurman had failed to drop-kfck from the p-yard line. 1t was Firginia’s third and last opportunity to score. Mahan in LimeliEht. The teams battled very evenly throughout the remainder Of the game. although Harvard. through long runs by Mahan and Wilcox and 50-yard sprint by Rollins. had the better average in yards gained.
