FIELD GOAL ENABLES VIRGINIA ID SCORE WIN OVER GEORGIA Tibbett Puts Ball Between Posts as Whistle Blows for Ending of Game Athens. Ga, October 23.-( (Special) )-Vir- ginia received repayment this afternoon for the defeat handed her by Harvard via the field goal route by slipping across one that turned an almost sure victory for Georgia into Virginia win. Half back Tibbett, substituted in the last quar- ter for E. Anderson. booted drop kick through the crossbars from Georgia’s 2o- yard line for a to ‘ victory. So close did Virginia come to losing the game that just as Tibbett stuck his foot into the ball, Field Judge Brooks blew his whis- tie, declaring the end of playing time. Discussion Is rife here tonight regarding the time as many believe that the time keeper forgot to blow the whistle and those who believe he blew 1t on time. Both teams scored in the first quar- ter. Powell of Georgia intercepted Virginia forward pass, and aided by splendid interference by Holsendorf, faced 80 yards for a touchdown, Henderson kicking the goal After the next kickoff Virginia, using Mayer and E. Anderson on sweeping end runs. two of which. were for 22 aand 25 yards respectively, rushed the ball to Georgia’s two-yard line. where Mayer bucked it over for touchdown, but failed at goal. Neither side could score in the remainder of the period or in the second and fourth. and with the score to G in Georgia’s favor, there seemed little chance for a Virginia victory. The defense of both sides stiffened, and the game devolved itself into a bunting duel between Thurman and Paddock with little to choose. The way the ends were covering a sweeping end run by Mayer toward the conclusion of the fourth quarter for 35 yards put the ball within 15 yards of Georsia’s goal. couple of yards gain by Mayer and then Tibbett dropped back and made his field goal, the ball passing just inside the left goal post. Mayer, Anderson and Tibbetts were the Virginia defensive stars; Paddock, Pow ell and Neville for Georgia. To single out the defensive stars on either side would be doing the rest of the elevens an injustice. but the two ends of each side are probably deserving of the bulk of the credit. The game was fiercely, but cleanly fought, there being but three penalties during the game, two on Geor- sia and one on Virginia. It would have been a tough game for either side to lose but the breaks favored Virginia. Following is the lineup: Virgnia-White, left end; Ward left tackle; H. Coleman, left guard T. Cole man, center; Thurman, right guard; G. end; Berkeley, quarterback; Mayer, left halfback E. Anderson, right halfback; Sparr, fullback. Georgia–Thompson, left end; Thrash, left tackle; -Conyers, left guard; Hender- son, center; German, right guard; Mccon- nell, right tackle; Garrard. right end; Paddock, quarterback; Dezendorf, left halfback; Powell, right halfback; Holzen- dorf, fullback. Summary: Substitutions: Virginia Poin- dexter for White. Moore for Ward, Brown for T. Coleman, Tibbett for E. Ander- son. Georgia: Culbreath for Conyers, Dorsey for Dezendorf. Melville tor Holzendorf. Touchdowns: Mayer and Powell. Goal from touchdown, Henderson,; goal from field, Tibbett. Time of quarters, 12 min utes. Referee, Barry (Georgetown).
