CORNHUSKERS LEAD IN WEST Stiehm’s Men the Equal of Any Team in Western Country. IOWA STRONG IN CONFERENCE Hawkeyes, with Same Team which Bucked Nebraska ia Field, Could Have Defeated Both Chicago and Minnesota. While it was confidently expected by all ardent Nebraska rooters that the that the famous Cornhuskers catacylsm would upheave the Iowa Hawkeyes by an over whelming score. the final count of 16 TO Z. Nebraska last Saturday goes TO prove that the Huskers can for the second year hold up their end in asserting a claim to the western championship. OF course. il is admitted that the Huskers did not play Iowa as they did Kansas and the Michigan Aggies, but they played good enough foot ball to trim Iowa and Iowa ranks high in the Western conference. Nebraska, didn’t defeat the same Iowa Saturday that Chicago and Minnesota did earlier in the season. Both Chicago and Minnesota won to 0 victories but both were won from a weakened team The Hawkeyes in but two games, the Ames and Nebraska combats, presented their full strength. In other battles they were materially weakened by players alb sent on account OF injuries. Barron, that mountain of beef, who occupies left tackle for the Hawkeyes, played against neither Chicago nor Mime sofa. And it was Barron. who so ruth lessly upset the right side of the Ne braska line and played the way for long gains by the fast Hawkeye backfield. On the defense it was Barron, who broke through and stopped Nebraska rushes in the embryo. With Baron alone out of a game, the Hawkeyes would be weakened excessively and Barron was absent in both the Minnesota and Chicago games. Playing next to Barron in the guard position was a young avalanch named Wilson. Wilson was a bad actor Sat urday from the Nebraska viewpoint. And Wilson was out Of the Chicago game. The backfleld was just as much stronger as presented against Nebraska than against Minnesota and Chicago, as was the line Garretson, who made long and consistent gains against the Huskers, was out of both the Minnesota and Chi cago games. SO it can be seen by even a judge pre- JUDGED against the Nebraska that the heroes OF this state can hold their own with the best the Western conference affords. To add to this declaration is the belief of the Hawkeyes themselves, mem bers of the Western conference. It is unanimously felt at Iowa City that the Hawkeyes could have defeated both Chi cago and Minnesota. had they been able to present lineups of complete strength. That being the case Iowa would be tied with Illinois for the conference title. With the same team, which fell before Nebraska, the Hawkeyes declare they could have tied for the conference cham plonship. thus practical admission OF the superiority of Nebraska over conference championship team. Walter Eckersall. who refereed the game. is of the opinion that Nebraska is as strong as any team in the west. That is saying a good deal, for Eckie is a Western conference man. Eckie has seen Michigan. Notre Dame. Illinois. Chi cago and Nebraska in action, he has worked right behind those teams. officiating in games in which they played, and Eckie says Nebraska could hold it’s own with any of the four named. And so. even though a little disappointed because Nebraska did not win by a large score, Cornhusker enthusiasts for the second time claim western SUI periority for this state. Nebraska men dc not think either Illinois or Notre Dame could defeat Nebraska and they are Will ing TO back up their judgment. The special train on the Rock Island returned to Omaha and Lincoln Nlnday morning. Two Of the cars contained Omaha men and were dropped here. The Omaha gang is a bit peeved With Iowa City. Several disturbances occurred but the main objection to Iowa, accord ing TO the Omaha bunch. is the lack OF willingness of the Hawkeyes to support their team. A wad of coin went over from Omaha TO Iowa City in those two Omaha cars and tine delegation Of HuskeI

MINNESOTA l}..CHICAGO / In the most sensational football game played in the west in many years, the Minnesota machine this afternoon defeated Chicago by a score Of 13 to 7. The attack of the Co piers was wonderful and the Chicago warriors were powerless to stop their steady onrush. Twice during the first quarter was Minnesota able to take the ball to Chicago’s one yard-line, being held for downs the first time. Des Jar diem punted to center of the field and the Gophers by bewildering at tack again carried the ball to the Chicago two-foot line, where Scion, the star Minnesota fullback, went over for the first count Of the game. Minnesota missed goal. Chicago came back in the second quarter with touchdown, made pos sible by blocked punt on Mime sofas 30-yard line. Several beautifull forward passes took the ball to the Gopher vineyard line where Rus sell scored a touchdown. Goal was kicked During the remainder of the quarter Minnesota played Chicago completely off it’s feet, taking the ball to the vineyard line where time for the first half was called. Chicago played a much stronger game during the first part of the third quarter, but the steady and forceful onrushes of Minnesota were too much for their forwards and the Gophers began to rip through the line for gains almost at will. Scion took prominent part in nearly every play and his punting was equal to that of Des Jardien. In the fourth quarter Minnesota took the ball from the fifty-yard line and went for a toucfdown; kicking goal. Des Jardien was injured and left the game. Score, Minnesota 13, Chicago Z, middle of last quarter. There was no more scoring and Minnesota was the winner in a contest which will go down as one of the most spectacular ever played.
