MAROONS LOSE CHAMP 0NsH|P chicaso’s Hopes for Conference Title for 1915 Arc Shattered by Minnesota Saturday. THE SCORE WAS 20 TO z Penalties Against Maroons at Critical Times Were costly-RusseII Saves Team From Being Shut-out. MINNEAPOLIS, Mimi, Nov. 10 The student body of the University of Minnesota was rampant here tonight, celebrating the victory of the Gophers over Chicago university’s team by a score of 20 to T. Thousands Of visitors are damned into the cafes to watch the students and hear the yells The battle was staged on field made slippery by the first real snow fall OF the season. Over 10000 people were crowded into Northrop field. Two penalties against Chicago at critical moments aided greatly In CIV offense was for holding and the sec ties being imposed with the ball on the Maroon twenty yard line. With the goal so close, Bierman had little difficulty in circling the right end and rushing over the fifteen remaining yards to the Chicago goal line. After Baston kicked goal, the ball was SEQ sawed back and forth in the middle of the field until the end of the period. How Chicago Scored. Lightning like forward passes and clever lodging by Russell helped Chi cago put over their only score in the second period. Russell was superladue almost entirely to his brilliant work that Chicago was saved white washing. His lodging had advanced | the ball to Minnesota’s ten yard line and the Gophers were fighting like wild men to break up the plays, when he threw the ball to Agar who put It over the line. 1t was Minnesota’s big captain who piled up the score in the third period and it was his brawny frame that smashed the Stage defense to flinders. | The crowd went wild with cheers for Bierman when he broke through time and again for short gains and finally, over for touchdown. And It was Bierman who brought the ball back time after time as the plucky Russell booted it down the field. | After the second Minnesota touch down it seemed impossible for the +! C11icagoans to make any gains / through the line and Russell rescrted | more frequently to bootfng. | Long, the Minnesota quarterback, | by brilliant running and lodging. brought the ball down the field in | the fourth quarter and finally squeezed It over the line for Minnesota 8 | third. score. Baston failed to kick goal The game ended with the ball in Chicago territory. Looking ruefully at his wrecked hopes Of the conference champion | ship. Coach Stagg Of Chicago declared tonight that he was satisfied with the | work OF his team. ut was a great game.’ said the vet eran coach. “and while I don’t want to take the part of wolfer, feel that my team would have done better on dry field.
