Iowa Minnesota Clash Tops Big Team Conference Program. !. U. MAY UPSET OHIO Purdue Favored to Trim Chicago. CHICAGO Oct. 26.-The lack of upsets which has marked the first half of the 1923 football season in the middle west appears likely to be changed Saturday. Every i’m portant team in this territory is scheduled against a formidable OPP ponent and the biggest surprise would be for all games to run true to form. Iowa and Minnesota top the program with the only contest between undefeated western conference elevems. Both Iowa and Minnesota enterrain championship hopes and the winner of this game stands an excellent chance of at least sharing the title. GOphers Have Endge Minnesota is conceded a Slight edge, but the Hawkeyes are keyed for the contest. Iowas offense is led by Mayes McLain, Charging Cherokee” who led the country in scoring while playing for Haskell in 1925. “Bronko” Nagurski, the “pulverizing pole” is the ace of the Gophers’ back field and the rivalry between the two candidates for all-America football honors is attracting much interest. Illinois, 1927 conference champion, is an overwhelming favorite to defeat Northwestern in the Illini homecoming feature. Zuppke appears to have an even stronger team than in 1927. Here’s Pats Chance Ohio is Indiana’s home-co coming guest in a game which appears to be the days best chance for an up set. Pat Page has one of the best Hoosier teams in history, and al though defeated by Illinois last week Indiana is certain to cause plenty of trouble in the conference | race. Glenn Thistlethwaite’s Wisconsin team is also in the undefeated class, but tie with Purdue has put it out of the championship running The Badgers meet Michigan at Anr Arbor in game which seems likely ! to result in the first Wisconsin vic tory over Michigan since 1899. Chicago, after fearing Purdue for many years, finally is faced witt the likelihood Of losing to the Boilermakers. The Maroons havt had the Indian sign” on Purdue for many years, but are badly Grip. pied as the result of crushing de. feats as the hands of Iowa and Min neSOta. Notre Danes eleven, far below thu usual standard of Knute Rockne’! teams, meets strong Drake team but appears to have sufficient elias: to defeat the Iowa school.
