Memories of past humiliations were completely erased from mind yesterday afternoon when Washington and Lee University turned the tables on George town University. and sent the HILL toppers down to defeat by the score Of Is TO 0. The game. the first big contest of the local season was played at Broad Street Park before n crowd OF 5000 enthusiastic supporters OF the two contcnders. 1t was too much Young that defeated Georgetown. This young man from the LeXingto institution not only kept the oval in the enemys territory by his superb punts, but managed to pick his way through the Hilltoppers for sixty-flve-yard run, and figured in the majority OF the successful gains. No better day for game could have been desired The air WAS crisp and the sun beamcd over the field Little or no wind was blowing, and the field. in spite OF the downpour Of rain during the week. was in good shape for the contest. From the spectators view point, the conditions were ideal. w. d. l.. Battlers Were Lucky. Luck figured In the victory of wash ington and Lee, particularly in the first half, when all the breaks went against Georgetown. Fumbles counted heavily. and the first touchdown came as the result OF one. The final score, however, was well earned by the MIN bled foo ed Young, who made one of the most spectacular plays ever pulled off on the local gridiron. His run through the Hilltop team will linger long in the football annals OF Washington and Lee. 1t cannot be said that either team played at top form. Fumbles were not infrequent on either side. though Georgetown figured chiefly in this brand of miscues. Again. neither team at ka1 70 III IL lions. probably reserving them for later contests. Old-time football, inter spersed with attempts at forward passes. marked the style of play. II was line buck and end run, punt and pass, without even a double pass at tempted Generals 0utcloss Georgetown. Washington and Lee clearly out classed the Catholics In the punting game. Young sent his long spirals down the field time and time again for forty to fifty yards, while Georgetown was unable to get off any particularly long kick. On the exchange of punts, the Generals gained every time. Then, too. the Lexington ends were down undor the ball like flash. and seldom did tho receiver get started. The line of tho Hilltoppers was i’m pregnable. although lanky Miles gave his opponents all that they desired. The Generals were unable to mako material gains here, and practically all ground WAS made around the ends. The chief points of vantage sought by the Hill toppers was off tackle, and Captain Murray could generally be depended upon to advance the oval in that directon. First Score Result OF tumble. Tho first score was made as the direct result Of tumble by Murray. The ball was picked by Sweetland, who ran for thirty yards and touchdown. He brought the oval directly behind the goal posts, and 1T was an easy thing for Young to send 1t between the uprights. The final touchdown came In the first play OF the final period, when Young fpick cd his way through the whole team. The game was free from roughness, except when Gormley made an attempt TO tackle .Donahue out of bounds. when the little quarter had stopped and was about to toss the ball to the umpire. For this play the Hilltoppers were pen Salizod. The action of Gormley was proably the result OF q mistake. but called down the wrath of the officials. q, For Washington and Lee. There was no scoring in the third period, but the fourth quarter was only few minutes old when Washington and Lee scored its second touchdown Expeeting punt as the ball was on wash ington and Lees S-yard line. George towns right end was pulled IN. and Young behind beautiful interference, ran 20 yards for touchdown. The goal was missed. In desperation the HHltoppers attempt ed to score by the means Of forward passes. A dozen or more were attempted but only one Of them worked and that for but a short gain. Washington and Lee also tried the long ning on numerous occasions. but Georgetown had a good defense for this play and the ball was invariably battei out Of danger II would hardly be fair 10 criticise too harshly the play OF the Georgetown team as they have shown fine Improvement since the writer last saw them In action against the Navy. Gormley and Ward. Georgetown’s tack les, were in almost every play. Nahum and Barron also played sterling football. Grove and McKenna, at center, were the weakest men in the rush line except pos sibly the ends. Georgetown’s backs were slow at start ing on more than one occasion and Col den lost his team many yards when he caught a punt on his own 3-yard line attempting to advance the ball when all he had to do was to drop behind the line for touchback and have play start on the 1o-yard mark. DR.. John Hegarty. coach Of the North Carolina A. & NJ. team, was an interested spectator at today’s game.
