IN HARDEST FIGHT Navy Had to Go Some to Beat Penn State, 10 to O. !, THRILLER ALL THE WAY Almost Free Fight Over Rough Play in Last Few Minutes of Game. III THRILLER ALL THE WAY Special Dispatch TO Tie Star ANNAPOLIS, Nd. November l5.-Pennsylvania State College gave the AM napolis midshipmen their hardest fight of the foot ball season here today and though the sailor lads emerged from tie battle with 10 to victory. large meas ure of glory goes to the Pennsylvanians, for their magnificent defensive work at crucial stages. Six times the Bellefonte players held the middies for downs when the ball rested within the shadow OF their goal posts and touchdowns seemed inevitable. The game was real thriller from start TO finish, and the splendid work OF the opposing teams from a foot ball stand point was only marred by an unpleasant incident just as the final whistle SOUNDED. and which to the big crowd of spectators looked as though it might eliminate in a free for all mixup. II all resulted from what a State player thought was unnecessary rough handling of Shorty Miller the star quarterback. by one of the Navy players. IN the closing minutes Of | the game the Bellefonte lads, by varied series of forward passes and trick plays. were marching toward the Navy goal line. With the ball on the Nays ~ yarG, little Miller essayed a wide end run around Nays left wing. as q result OF which he made 2 substantial gain, but ran beyond the side lines. He was close ~ pursued by one of the Navy players. and although Miller had lessened his pace, in fact stopped. the Navy man tackled him and threw him violently 10 the ground. This action was resented by State player. who started 10 punch hn for nd meantime other players of the rival teams began to spar on at one another The trouble started and was over so quicliy. that only few persons who We’re close by were able TO grasp just what was going on. Meantime the squad 81 SaXy substitutes jumped up from the side line benches and ran helter skelter acroes the field, but the referee had sounded the final whistle and all hands went TO the dressing rooms in jig time, In response TO orders. Navy people and Others Condemned the disgraceful Incident Butte get back 10 the game, Ii was “A struggle of the Embarrassing order all the way. The iniddies did all of their scoling in the first half. They registered a touchdown and the resultant goal i’m The opening period and in the second quarter the best they could do was add three points. the result of “A field goal which big Babe Brown kicked from placement from the 3o-yard mark. Though IL Was early apparent that the middies wers W. against the most formidable f-e tney have encountered this season yet Aheir attack seemed to lack much of the dash and fire displayed In previous games. In actual rushing the middies gained probably, more than twice as much ground as did State College. In fact. their plan of battle seemed to be TO force the lighting. and as result OF this they kept the visitors on the defensive most of the time but except for the one instance ia the first period they We’re not equal to the occasion when a plunge through the line for yard or two would have counted for a touchdown. Once in the second period State recovered the ball on downs when the middies had carried il inside of their 1O-yard, but State always seemed able To rally in the pinches. This demonstration in the first half was only to be followed by the masterful defensive playing in the second half. when five times the middies. after rushing from 10 TO 10 yards, were held FIR downs with distance of only a foot to a yard to go for touchdown. Whatever sensational work Shorty Miller might have been able to show against the strong Navy eleven was prevented by the fact that ii rained all dur ing the game and for two hours before. As a result the turf was heavy and Shiny and the little fellow got away only on two or three occasions, and then for gains OF less than – yards. And “A further handicap was an injury “ hich he sustained before the close OF the the last few minutes of the game He drove his team in splendid style and PLAYED a strong defensive game. The line-un and SUMMARY.
