ROMP FOR M|DD|ES CHICAGO GETS TITLE Annapolis Smothers New York University by 48 to O. VERY RAGGED EXHIBITION Five Of the Regular Sailors Are Absent-Gothamites Weak on “A Defensive. Special Disps1<h 10 The Star ANNAPOLIS. Md. December o. Playing with five of the regular men out of the lineup, Navy closed its local foot ball season here this afternoon by easily disposing of the eleven of New Yo;k University. The final score was 4S to o. - The game was the most ragged exhibitson OF foot ball that has been witnessed en- the academy gridiron this fall Both teams were frequently penaliZed for hold ing and Offside, although the Middies suffered the loss of almost twice as many yards as the visitors in this respect. The New Workers We’re lamentably weak on the defensive. Their forwards not only did not play low enough, but also charged slowly. As a. result the Navy backs found little difficulty plunging through tackle and guard for substantial gains. But only in flashes did the Navy attack display the snap and dash that have char acterized former games. In the third period the Middies failed to register a single count Although it was early apparent that the New Workers would prove an easy proposition to handle, yet the MILDLY line yielded on three occasions and enabled the varsity boys TO gain fist down by line plGnging. and in addition the visitors reeled off three forward passes for gains OF from 10 to 70 yards. 1t was probably their failure to employ This play oftener that they did not get within scoring distance. for on no occasion did the New IoI kers have possession of the ball in size OF Nays 4o-yard line. Their only chance to register a score by any route was an almost hopeless one. 1t was when Baker attempted n field goal from placement from the middle Of the field The ball cleared the mass of players. but fell at least IL yards short as well as vide OF the posts. Though the game was poor one from foot ball standpoint. there was one stir ring play that electrified the crowd OF spectators. This was the ope ming play OF the game. when Nichols received New Yorks kickoff on his own 20-yard Ine. and lodged his way through al of the opposing players for an So-yard sprint and touchdown. He eluded tacxlers with remarkable agility. Nichols also essayed end runs for gains of from % 10 40 yards. and his brilliant work. coupled with performances in previous games, more than assured him OF the pilots job in the big game against the West Point Cadets next Saturday. Neither McReavey or Failing, the heavy and fast haifbacks, nor Harrison, the sturdy line plunging fullback. nor Brown. the big right guard, and Ralston. left tackle, got into today game at all. The rest of the regulars played only a part of the first half. but We’re substituted at the opening of the last half. Not only the substitutes. but number of the second string men were put IN at Inherent times. the visitors showed their greatest fight in the third period. when they not only held the Addies without a score but also did little ground gaining their own account But they could not stand the pace for long. On the other hand. this-period found the Middies playing very raggedly. They could not get their attack working smoothly, and besides ihev made several fumbles, and numer- Gus penalties We’re imposed against them. Local Navy aGheTents are thoroughly satisfied over the prospects for the West Point game. They can see nothing but a Navy victory. though they realize that the Army cadets will be as formidable a foe as ever before. With the days game the total number OF points scored by Navy this season registers 293. with seven on the opposite of the led ger. The only team that was able to score on the Mid dies was Buckneli. and the hardest fight encountered was with Penn State last Saturday, the Middies winning by 10 to o. The lineup and summary.
