VANDERBILT IN DEFEAT Southern CoIIegianS Bow to Harvard Second Eleven. CRIMSON STRONG ON PASS Fast, Powerful Tackling Places Visitors at Disadvantage Because of Injuries. Cambridge, Mass NOV. The Wander bilt football team, which has had every thing its own way in the South mis- season, sustained defeat me hands OF the Harvard substitutes to-day. 9 TO 3. in the Cambridge stadium. The Southern players were in poor physical condition after two hard matches preceding the game and their long journey north did not help them any. To-day they found the Harvard second eleven strong play ers, ready to play aggressive football and so good defensively that the Com modores seldom were able to make their plays go, and then only when the bali was well within their territory. Vanderbilt was handicapped almost from the start by the injury 10 Captain Hardage who has figured so prominently in the teams forward passing game Harvards mishandling Of kicks was something OF which the Southerners were Quick 10 take advantage. Harvard had FELTON, in the game to do the kicking for two periods. but Willetts. n suDsti- tute came TO the front with some Won derful punts. which later completely phased the Vanderbilt backheld Harvard got It’s touchdown in the second period, there being no scoring for the first fifteen minutes of play. Vanderbilt interfered with a fair catch on its own ls-yard line, and had 10 pay a fifteen yard penalty Once within scoring dis lance Harvard bent itself To the attack with a vengeance, and proceeded TO ham fto -, no X ing the touchdown after Graustein had made some splendid gains through the left side Of the Vanderbilt rush line. Vanderbilt was six points behind when the second half opened, and for the next fifteen minutes played all around the Harward men. T. Brown, the tackle, placed the Commodorcs in position TO score by recovering the ball on Harvard’s 25-yard line, where Graustein mishandled one OF Curlins long kicks. Harvard’s defence here was good, but finally Curtin backed away and kicked the ball over the Harward crossbar. Vanderbilt after this was on the defensive all the time, doing ! good work when Harvard was close TO It’s | goal line. | After being stopped dead on the l5-yard ! line, Harvard was reinforced by Milhol- | land who in his first play. kicked field | goal from the 22-yard line. HOLSTER | earlier in the game had an equally easy shot, but the Vanderbilt rushers came IN | on him and blocked the Kick. | The Vanderbilt team had good offence ! and one that would have been much more effective had the players been In good physical condition. Vanderbilts players were continually on the ground because | Of the clean but hard football OF the Harvard men. Four times during the match the officials penalized Vanderbilt | for taking out too much time because OF injuries, and late In the game Harvard waived the penalty rule. There was a lot of forward passing on the part of the Southern team to-day but until the last play OF the game Vanderbilt failed to make even one forward pass that was successful. / Harvard tried the forward pass tWice’ once getting into position to score, when | u. rockingham took a forward pass from I Freddy, but later losing touchdown ! when FELTON, just missed reaching pass ! that Freddy made across the Vanderbilt / goal line.

HARVARD WINS VICTORY But Vanderbilt Leaves Reputation for Gameness and Speed. Cambridge, Mass, Nov. 11.-Harward sent the Vanderbilt football team back to the southland with a 9 to 3 defeat, but the commodores left behind them a reputation for speed and versatility IN attack and stubbornn ess in defense that will be remembered. Using a team made up almost Who’ll 1y of substitutes, Harvard scored a touchdown and a field goal in the sec ond and fourth periods, respectively. Crimson errors permitted the south erners in the third period to get with in drop kicking distance of Harvard S goal and Curtin lifted the ball over for three points. AS usual, Harvard tried out the strength of its defense in the first period, kicking usually on the second down. 1t was not until after five min utes of play in the second period that Harvard’s attack reached its full stride and then the ball was carried down the field 35 yards for a touchdown. Vanderbilt came back strong in the third period, scoring a field goal and outplaying the crimson until the two last minutes. Then Harvard brought its strongest offense into action and the ball was carried to the four-yard line. The strength of the Vanderbilt defense proved too strong for the Harward attack, and after three rushes, Mtlholland, the crimson end, dropped a goal from the field from the 22-yard line. Vanderbilt brought out in the last ten minutes of play nearly her full repertoire of offensive tactics Among the most successful plays was delay ed forward pass in which the ball was handled by four men and finally snatched down from the air by Rob bins for gain of % yards. 1t was one of the most brilliantly executed plays seen in the stadium since Cor nell uncovered triple forward pass three years ago. The Vanderbilt attack was we’ll judged variety, of end runs. The Harvard defense for the Vanderbilt plays would crumpIe up for a couple of scrimmages then the Grim son forwards would fathom the at tack and the opposing backs would be thrown for losses.
