FIRST FOOT BALL GAME EASILY WON Georgetown Has Little Trouble Disposing of Randolph Macon, 800. WORK OF BACK FIELD FEATURE OF PLAY Blue and Gray Backs Carry the Ball for Long Gains Almost Unhindered. BY n. C. BYRD. lhirty-nine TO nothing was the score by which Georgetown won the opening game of its foot ball season yesterday. The eleven defeated was from the Randolph Macon College. There was no time during the contest when the southerners had the least chance to advance the ball against the aggressive defense put up by the Blue and Gray men, while George town experienced little or no trouble in gaining the necessary | distance after the first few min utes OF play. Even though the Georgetown eleven was prevented from scoring in the first few minutes of play, there was never any COM parlson between the two teams. The Blue and Gray advanced the ball far enough to have scored a touchdown in a little while after the game had started, but fumbles at critical moments held the visit. ors’ goal line inviolate. Georgetown received the kick Oft and ran the ball back almost to the middle of the field. On two successive split plays, the same as was used last year, the ball was carried for about fifteen yards. Then Costello got away on long run around left end. but fumbled the ball when tackled. Had he held the oval a touchdown would have been sure to result almost Immediately, as at no time did the Hilltoppers find it a hard matter to make the ten yards in four downs. RIM. Forced to Kick. Randolph Macon kicked out of danger. and the ball was not returned any appreciable distance. When the two elevens lined up for scrimmage. though. the Blue and Gray backs began to rip off gains through the tackles and around the ends. varying from 3 to IL yards The ball was carried to within two feet of the goal line in this manner. from which point Foley. who played quarter. dove through center for the score. After the first touchdown Georgetown har in it’s march to the goal line whenever it secured possession of the ball. The continued grabbing after elusive backs and the heavy charges of the opposing line gradually wore down the team from Virginia. The Georgetown backs demonstrated that they form the best broken field rum ming combination seen here in long time Time and again they evaded what looked to be sure tackles. and SO elusive were they that the opposing player never knew that he had one of them until he was on the ground with a couple of men on top Of him. With Campazzi, Costello and Fury behind the line the Hilltoppers have a mighty capable COM bination, as was proved yesterday. even though the team they were against was not of a very high standard. There were two men in the secondary defense of the Randolph Macon eleven ed to get their man, but the others hard ly ever downed a man in a clean-cue manner Had it not been for the excel lent defensive work of these two men, the score would have BEEN much larger. There was very little punting in the game. Practically all that was done was by the Randolph Macon eleven. Every time it got the ball 1t was held and COM pelled to kick On the contrary the Blue and Gray team had to boot the ball but twice during the game. The two times he did punt Costello got the ball away for a fair distance. Instead Of punting the Georgetown eleven would take the kick formation and Costello would start out around the end. There We’re few times when there was an end to bother him, and in the majority OF instances in which the play was tried 1t was successful enough to gain from lO to 20 yards. Make Several Long Gains. Costello and Fury both got away on long runs around the ends. but the lat ter did 3most of his ground-gaining on plays which hit just off tackle. Fury got away twice. though. on end runs. which in touchdowns Campazzi also made some substantial gains. During the latter part Of the third Quarter the Georgetown coaches began to make substitutions. Man after man was sent in until almost two whole teams were in the game. Some of the substitutes showed form which presages danger to the jobs Of the regulars. OF course, when they went in the opposing linemen We’re worn down but the work Of the sec. ond string men was above the ordinary. Especially was Murray q noticeable fig. ure. He carries the ball well and handles himself as though he knows the game One remarkable feature to the pla.- of the Georgetown team was the fact that IL seemed to make specially OF forward passing 1t Is probable that II tried more Of that kind of game than 1t has In any OF it’s contests in previous years. It was rather a coincidence, too. that the only really successful pass made was one
