QUAKE SHAKES QUAKERS Shock Which Lays Them Low Is State College Attack. SCORE. TWENTY-FIVE TO SIX Pennsylvania s Aggressive Guests Roll Up a Score Of Points in First Period. fBy Telegraph 20 The Trbune.l PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 2S.-Not in a good many years has Pennsylvania suffered 4 more crushing defeat than that administered by Pennsylvania State College this afternoon. The hnal score was – TO e. More than twelve thousand enthusiasts turned out T. see the game. and saw I’m the visiting az gregation one OF the greatest football ma chimes that ever came TO Franklin Field. An odd feature Of the game was that the state scored 20 points in the FIRST period, and had not the Pennsylvania coaches sent in a substitute set Of backs State would have overwhelmed the Red and Blue by much larger score With the advent Of the second string men the Quakcrs checked the PUSHES OF State backs. and. except for safety made from a blocked punt kicked hack of the goal line State was held score less for the remainder Of the game. States first touchdown came Ike bolt Of lightning from a clear sky. The initial k’ck-oT oy Captain Mercer went 20 Miller quarterback Of the visiting team. on his own lo-yard line. Miller turned IN back Of his Interference which formed like a flying wedge. The Pennsylvania team grouped 10 meet IT, and the two teams crashed on the 55-yard line Miller nimbly extricated himself and spr.nted for the side line. Captain Mercer dashed across the field 20 intercept him, but slipped. and Miller raced by with only Harrington. the halfback. after him. States quarterback was too fleet OF foot however. and beat his pursuer TO the goal line by three yards II was the first time IN twelve years that a touchdown had been made on Pennsylvania from the initial kick-of. States second touchdown came within two minutes OF resumption OF play Poor Judgment I’m the selection Of plays caused PENNSYLVANIA 10 be held for downs at mid field. From this point State carried the ball over in three plays. King Jumped along the side line for twenty-five yards before he was forced out OF bounds. Barry could not gain an inch, and Miller decided on an end run, carrying the oall himself With marvellous skill ne lodged, backed up and side-stepped half a dozen tacklers until he had a clear field Tor a thirty-fve-yard run and a touchdown. The third touchdown was even more spec tacular than the first. Because OF a FUN BILE which Barry recovered state was forced back 10 the 5-yard line This made II necessary for Mauthe to kick from behind the goal line. He sent a high twist ing punt 70 Marshall. which the latter al , lowed to get away from him. Barry was down almost with the ball. As il bounded he scooped il up and before Pennsylvania = backs realized what had happened he was spriuting down the field with a ten-yard lead lie completed his siXty-yard run for the third score without opposition. Pennsylvania a few minutes later tried 70 rush the ball out from the 3O-yard line bur was obliged 10 kick. Thayer. who had replaced Mercer. made a poor Kick and it was blocked by Barry. Harrington chased the ball as it rolled back over Pennsylvania’s goal line and fell on il for safety. With the advent of Pennsylvania sec ond string Of hacks the play Of the Quaksrs improved and throughout the second period the Quakers not only held State IN check. but outplayed the visitors I’m decisive fashion. lust before the close OF the first half the Juakers got their only score. \ poor Kick bv Afauthe gave Pennsylvania the ball on States S5-yard line. on the next play Minds. who had replaced Barr, took the ball for an end run. BY skilful lodging he fought his way through the entire State team for tbrv-dveyard PUN and a touchdown. PENNSYLVANIA stuck 90 her substitutes FOR tho third period and continued TO hold state even. The last play Of the third period was q punt which Keough let get away from MIN and roll 20 the l-yard line. Mercer kicked on tho following play. but the bail WAS blocked and ue had to fall on 10 for another safety For the remainder OF the game the TWO teams pilved each other 90 a staudsulI Barry and Miller were the stars of the state team. and We’re wellnigh invnciole. Minds and Keough, both substitute backs, did the stellar work for Pennsylvania. ( Franklin Field was a gloomy place after tb, game. Nnt a coach would say word. and the Pennsylvania undergraduates-four thousand n uumber-hled ont of the field ,yitbout cheering the team IN It’s training quarter. as they usually do after dcleat. rr-t.. fly.-un follows.

West Point Might Hold Top Rating Penn’s Defeat and Trouncing Brown Received Boost Cadets Stock With Harvard, Trinity and Pennsyl- vania State scored upon Saturday for the first time this season, and Brown suffering her initial defeat, the West Point Cadets, in the opinion of the football experts, hold the top rating today in the struggle among the east ern colleges. As the West Point schedule for the next three weeks is light one, foot- ball followers believe that the cadets will maintain their place, at least un- til the culminatipg game with the Middies. Harvard had an unexpectedly easy time defeating Brown. 20 to 6, on Sat- urday, and the same could be said of the Pennsylvania State College, which won from the University of Pennsyl- vania, 22 to 6. “A week ago Brown de- feated the Quakers. 6 to 0. Princeton defeated Holy Cross, 20 to o, at Princeton. Brilliant individ- ual running and the successful use of the forward pass and onside kick were the contributing factors in the Princeton victory, but when it came to straight football the Holy Cross eleven more than held their own and gained more ground by rushing than any team which has faced Princeton so far this season has been able to do. .f
