NO POINTS SCORED IN ANNAPOLIS GAME Navy and Washington and jefferson Teams Engage in Stubborn Battle. Special Dispatch to The Star ANNAPOLIS, Md, November Elm a game Astounding in all sorts OF penal ties. as we’ll as much good foot ball. Navy and Washington and letters this afternoon played each other to a stand still. During fifty minutes Of actual play neither side was able to cross the other’s goal line. The contest, In many ways, was one OF the scrappiest and most closely contested games seen In Annapolis this season. Nays attack was the more agrees sive, but the visitors. particularly when pressed back within their 25-yard mark, showed a bulldog defense that the Sailors could not overcome. Each side made an effort to score from field kicks, but all attempts In this line were unavaiIing. The Sailors first attempt to get a figure on their side Of the scoreboard was when Dalton tried a placement from formation on the visitors 25-yard line, at a rather easy angle. The ball went wild, how ever, as it did later in the game. when Dalton heeled a fair catch on the A. yard line, and In the following attempt at a placement his booting proved I’M true. 1ngham made the visitors try for a tally, when he booted a true one from the 35-yard line, but did not get steam enough into the kick TO carry 1t over the bar. Many Penalties. The officials were kept busy infiicting penalties straight through the contest. The official discipline for offenses rang ing all the way from tripping and hold ing to offside play set each team back for an aggregate Of fully 90 yards during the contest. In the opening period there was little to choose between the two. although Dali tons punting was a shade the better show the other anything in the plunging line. and both were, in a measure, dependent upon their kicking staff. In addition to the greater length OF Dalton’s punts and his neat placing. Navy’s advantage was increased by the manner in which Erwin, who played quarter for the first time this season, and Austin, ran the visitors kicks back. Forsythe and Tibbens of the visiting aggregation were constantly harassed by the Navy ends In this department and frequently thrown back for losses. Both teams showed improvement in attacking i’m the second half. although the work of Washington and Jefferson did not begin to shine until too late in the contest to be Of any avail. The Sailors twice had the leather inside their opponents 20-yard line. and managed to keep II safely over that side of the middle of the field all druing the half. Their best chance came late in the half, when they secured the ball on tumble inside the Washington and Jefferson 10 yard point. The Pennsylvanians. how ever. braced, and put up a stonewall defense that could not be overcome. Middies’ Defense Strong. The defense of the locals. however, prevented the visitors from tallying but three first downs during the battle. One OF these was made on the longest sprint Of the contest. when Suffer. on a quarterback run. got away for 20 yards behind beautiful interference. Much pleasure was expressed in naval circles over the showing of Erwin, at quarter. who was second call man after Byrd, the man who stepped into the breach after the accident to Wilson Err win, who is a brother of the famous Red Erwin, of West Point fame a year or two ago. ran his team well, showed good judgment in handling kicks, and speed in getting back up the line with them when once caught. given a scare by an attack of heart trouble suffered by Coach John Aiken Mr.. Aiken was stricken at Carvel Hall after returning from the field, and, for a time, his condition was considered serious. He was put to bed however, and later rallied sufficiently to go over to Washington tonight.
