MIDSHIPMEN OUTCLASSED. The Washington And Jefferson College Team Downs Them BY Score of I6 To o. Saturdays game was disappolntment to many. The Navy thought the midshipmen would win and even the captain of the Washington and JEFF ferson College team stated previous to the game that he had no idea that his team would be successful = 1t was, however, and the Navy was defeated by score of l6 TO O. This defeat does not look very encouraging with the West Point game less than three weeks off. 1t looks as if the midshipmen cannot defeat any opponent that plays fairly strong foot ball. 1t was the first match of 4 the season for Washington and jefferson College with an Eastern team, but it has made quite a reputation for itself among colleges in Ohio yand Western Pennsylvania. There was one score in the first half, Plowett kicking a goal from the field. In the second half Plowett scored a touchdown after consistent gains ON line plunges, but missed the goal after punt out. Five minutes before time was called Captain Hayes blocked a punt, recovered the ball and ran 90 yards for touchdown. Plowett kicked tilt kOil. Plowett was very good man in the back field, but neither Eckells nor Tanner, at the halves, made special showing, and McDonough lost all but once when he attempted his quarter back runs in the last part of the game. All the backs, however, held on to the ball in good style. The play of the Navy ends was superior to that of the visitors, and it was notable that although Plowett could outpunt either Howard or Halsey, the Navy held its own very well on an exchange of punts, because their ends always downed their receiver of the kick with but little gain. The third and last score was the most brilliant individual play of the game. Captain Hayes broke through and blocked Halsey’s punts. He also recoved the ball and ran go yards for touchdown. Wilcox and Root pursued him closely, and the former got him just before he crossed right under the goal The able captain, however, hunched for the remaining yard and got the ball over. Plowett kicked the last goal. The eleven of st. Johns College, though suffering the worst defeat in its football history, scored touch dow on Virginia on Saturday after noon, and Green kicked an easy goal. Virginia ran up total of As points in 40 minutes play The st. Johns players were unable to make any ganis except toward the close of the second half, when Duval got away for two pretty 30-yard runs in succession. Marye’s hurdling and running back of a punt and the spectacular dashes by Duval were the features.
