GAME.TO THELAST Washburn Puts Up Splendid Game Against Colorado. Would Have Been Close Save for Bad Luck. FINAL SCORE 80 TO 5. Sons Of IchabOd Get Touchdown Near End. Their PIucky Fight Wins Adj miration of MOuntaineers. Offensive Football of a Good Quality. TINS SEELk80 OF the CO4uLII Tie CA4AFCA sity of Colorado today defeated the Washburn college team of Topeka by score Of 80 to 5. Outweighed by nearly Is pounds per man, Washburn’s well drilled team plowed through the heavy Colo RADIO men with a consistency that elected the unlimited praises of the local rooters. While it may be as serted that the best team won, it is equally true that the score does not in any degree indicate the relative strength of the two teams and score of Is to II would better tell the story of how well the ground was contested. The game was unusual in that it was display of offensive football of a good quality on both sides and decidedly weak offense on the part Of both teams. The luck there is in football favor ed the local team and with the half score of fortunate happenings elimimated the game would have been close and decidedly interesting. The splendid kicking of Galley from kick offs always carried the ball over the Washburn line and they were forced to kick out from the % yard line, giving the ball to Colorado in the center of the field, where the advantage in weight of the Boulder men enabled them to throw Captain Rob erts ahead for steady gains. Whenever Washburn came in possession OF the ball they marched down as stead lily toward the Colorado goal, wash burn scoring once in the last half ana all but scoring in the first half. once again in the second half Colorado goal was saved from a touchdown only by a matter of inches when couple of misdirected plays gave the ball to Colorado on their own ten yard line after Washburn had car ried it for 60 yards by brilliant play That colorado’s defense is weak there can be no question and Wash burn presented a better style Of Of tense. Her backs moved faster and followed their interference much better than did the Mountainous. Colorado’s scoring, save for a pretty Princeton by Galley and a double pass just at the close of the game, was done by straight football. From about the center of the field with but one minute to play, Galley received a double pass from Trudgian and ran the full distance for a touch down. The pass was a forward one, | the referee and linesman so declaring. The umpire, who saw little during the game, failed to see the play and it went as a touchdown. Washburn’s score came after carry ing the ball from a kickoff, by gains / of from two to ten yards the full / length of the field. Washburn kicked / line just at the close Of the first half. / The signal for the kick was given but / before it could be executed the whistle was blown and the ball went squarely | between the poles. There was no unpIeasantness in ! connection with the game charged to / the account of the players. 1t was clean, but the officials were not GER ] much time was lost in reading the | rules. / Washburn showed no bad effects Of / the altitude and as the game progress ed the Kansas men improved. They showed better physical. condition than did the Colorado men and for the / last fifteen minutes of play can be said to have had the Mountaineers on / the run. Very little punting was was done in the game. both teams being able to gain constantly when in | possession of the ball. Williams and ! Millice were depended upon for most of Wash burns gains. While little Cap ! tain Roberts made 20 per cent of the ground gained by Colorado On the defensive Colorado pulled her center out Of the front line Of de- / Tense playing him about four feet back of the guards and the Washburn | men sifted through for good gains, Offensive1y Co1orado’s only advantage was in the manner in which Moore | pulling and dragging after the runner was tackled. Caldwell, the Washburn ! colored halfba ok. played a steady game, but failed to come UP to what / had been anticipated. No one was injured on either team and Washburn left Boulder in good | spirits and much pleased at being able | to cross Colorado’s goal line, feeling that they had done much better than did the Kansas university players on / tn cir visit to Colorado. / On their showing today the Wash | burn men should be able to surely win from the Denver university in their Denver, though there will be a more decided difference in weights than there was TO-DAY. The Details. Washburn won the toss and kicked / of to Colorado. Caldwell sending the | ball 50 yards. Roberts returned it | 20. Galley was able to make but two yards and Colorado proceeded to / hammer Roberts and Christensen L and 8 yards. End run attempts by ! Colorado resulted in losses. smashes on the center took the ball to center of the field where Washburn held. but punted on the second down. Wash burns punts failed to carry far, Colo RADIO found Washburn’s left easy and hammered away for a touchdown but failed at goal ! Colorado kicked off over the line and on punt out got the ball on 50 yard line making gains at viii. Washburn showing lack of confidence. Colorado was able to retain the bali without loss until close of the half when Washburn braeed and started for a touchdown the whistle preventing. Here the at
