Conn, Nov. 14-Yale was defeated by Princeton today in the an- nual football game on Yale field by a score of Il to 6. Thirty thousand enthusiasts saw the contest which was stubborn and spectac- ular. Until the last five minutes of play the result was in doubt, with the score tied at 6. At this critical juncture De Witt, the Princeton captain. kicked marvellous goal winning the day for the orange and black and giving victory to his team over Yale for the first time since 1899 Princeton’s scores were practically the direct result of Yales fumbling and Yales small score, moreover, was due to fumbling equally as fatal. Within 14 min utes from the time play began Yale had torn through Princeton’s line consistently snd had sent Hogan across the line for a touch down. In Princeton’s Territory. Princeton could not cope with Yale’s defense and the play was largely in Princeton’s territory. Yale followed up her first advantage and again pressed to- wards Princeton’s goal line. A tumble gave the ball to Princeton when Yale was on the verge of crossing the line for an- other score. Yale again pounded Prince tons line for short but consistent gains and again Yale was in striking distance. The Yale quarterback, with the game well in hand apparently decided to save his men; and signalled for an attempt at goal from the field. Mitchell dropped lack and fumbled the ball on Princeton’s 20 yard line. The visitors broke through, De Witt snatched the ball and protected by fine interference, ran the length of the field for touch down. Vetterlein kicked the goal and the score stood even at at the end of the first half. The players on both teams came out for the second half in good physical con- dition. Yale’s superiority in offensive play was apparent for the Blue kept ythe ball in Princeton’s half of tll4 field most of the time. Twice Captain Rafferty’s men rushed the ball with irresistible force to- wards Princeton’s goal line and twice with touch downs in sight, Yale fum- bled. Yale Men Are Minded. Again the backs hurled themselves through the opposing line only to lose their last hope of victory through hold ing in the line which cost Yale 20 yards and the surrender of the ball The battle was waged furiously and the Yale men were the first to show the effects of the struggle. M2nceton meanwhile never WI vered. Yale could not gain, but her forwards were equally as sturdy on the defense and Princeton could not penetrate the Yale line for gains at all substantially. Accordingly, Princeton resorted to the kicking game. and with but five minutes to play, another Yale tumble placed Yale in serious trouble near her own goal Mne. Luckily for Yale. one of her men fell on the ball, but Bowman, the Yale back, was forced to kick from behind the goal line. Q fn Vetterlein, who was playing back for Princeton, caught the ball and heeled the catch for a kick from placement. With the score still at to 6, the great crowd was breathless while Dewitt pre- pared to try for a goal at a slight angle. The distance was forbidding. but De Witt shot the ball between goal posts in masterly style. thereby ensurng to Princeton its first victory in football over Yale since 1899. In the first half, when it was Yale’s ball in the center of the field, Hogafi, Yales sturdy right tackle, made several plunges which earned for Yale the first points of the game. In one rush Hogan covered 9 yards, to which he added sev- en more, and after a short push to Princeton’s 14-yard line. Hogan followed his magnificent work by fighting the rest of the way to the Princeton line for Yales first and what proved to be her only touchdown. When Mitchell kicked the goal the score stood to 0 in favor of Yale. Dewitt Becomes Busy. Short rushes usually for three or four yards finally planted the ball on Prince toms 17-yard line. Big Dewitt plunged through, blocked the ball and kicked 1t back to the 3S-yard line and with no one in front of him. picked 1t up neatly and started down the field He had gone 20 yards before one of his men caught up with him, and, by fine interference, the Princeton captain dropped behind Yale’s goal. Vetterlein kicked the goal and the score was tie. After 15 minutes of play in the second half. Yale got the ball on Princetons 35- yard line and Mitchell got through for 20 yards to Princeton’s 15-yard line. Hogan fought his way five yards further and two more rushes carried the ball to Princeton’s 7-yard line. Just as touch down seemed almost certain. a wretched tumble lost the ball to Yale. Princeton got the ball on downs and Dewitt kicked it AS yards Yale rushed 1t back to the middle of the field. but a fake play lost the ball five yards and Mitchell was forced to kick again. The ball rolled over the side lines on Princetons fve-yard line, gain of 55 wards and one of the longest in the kgame. A feature of the play soon after ward was a rush of 26 yards by Dewitt on a fake kick around Yale’s left end. Dewitt kicked immediately after and another tumble gave Princeton the ball on Yales 2s-yard line. Princeton man. aged to carry it to the 15-yard line, where Dewitt tried for a goal from the field, but the ball went wide. Then Vetterlein, on the kick out, caught the ball on Yale’s 42-yard line and, amid almost breath1ess silence. Dewitt stepped back for try at the goal from a placement. Dewitt Wins a Game. The kick was a tremendous one, but it went as straight as a cannon shot, clear ed the bar and scored the winning points for Princeton. The demonstration equal ed the similar one on Yale field the last time Princeton defeated Yale, also by field goal. The play was clean throughout and no penalties for rOughing were Imposed. Princeton played thirteen men, while for
