Crimson and White Floats Triumphanty Over the Doughty Tennesseans VISITORS ARE OUTCLASSED AND LOSE BY “A ID O Spectators Who Expected to See Ala bama Crushed Like an Egg Shell Were Dellrious With Joy at the Surprise-Pretty Work. Spurred on by a cold biting wind and the joyous shouts from more than two thousand rooters eleven sturdy sons of Alabama ploughed their way through the yellow and white line of Tennessee, and landed a victory which will long live as one of the ‘yarsity’s greatest football achievements. The final score was 24 to 0. As the trim figures of the red shirted Alabamians ran on the field there were great msgivlngs in the hearts of their admirers as they looked on the heavier forms of the Tennesseans. All such thoughts were soon dispelled, however. as time and again Alabama crashed through the opposing line for gains which led the way to victory. Notwithstanding the superior weight against them these doughty Alabamians outplayed Tennessee at every stage of the game and before the ball had hardly touched the ground on the first kick-off the Mountaineers were played completely off their feet. Amidst a continual roar from grandstand, bleachers and sidelines the crimson and white swept down the field, carrying everything before them. Alabama played straight football from start to finish and without resortng to tricks made the required distance practi- cally every time imperative measures be- came necessary. Coach Blount had evil dently imbued his men with the Yale style of play, for they used it on every oc- casion. Alabamas tackle back play worked superbly and huge gaps were torn through Tennessees line with it. A pecu- liar cross buck by the backs also proved very successful The play of the Crimson and White was clean andwclear cut. and the work of the men was far superior to that exhibited in the contest against Sewanee several weeks ago. The ends. who were painfully weak in the Sewanee game, were strong yesterday and quick as lightning. On ev- cry play they went down the field like deers and played fearful havoc with Ten nessee’s interference. Burke again proved to be the star of the Alabama team, and this muscular youngster promises to be one of the great est football players the south has ever developed He is absolutely devoid of fear and when once started with the ball it re- d stop him. To him is due much of the credit for winning yesterdays game. Wyatt played beautiful game at quarter back and only one pebble can be charged against him. In running with the ball he failed to observe the distance rule and his team was penalized twenty yards. He is steady, sure and as agile as a cat. Smith also surprised his most intimate friends by gaining ground whenever call ed upon. Though very light this young ster valiantly fought his way across the field, responding to every call like regular. In fact the entire Alabama team played an excellent and consistent game. Tennessee proved a distinct disappoint- ment Expecting a powerful team that would crash the Alabamians like eggshells. the spectators were amazed The visitors were slow at formation and their tackling was decidedly off color. Perhaps over confidence was largely to blame for this. as all the scores were made against them in the first half. After that they took q great brace and hardly before breath ing spell could be had, Aabamas goal was in grave danger. So hard was the fight that when the whistle sounded at the end of the second half the ball was within two yards of the Crimson and White line with the opposing team des- peratey struggling over it. After the first exhiliration of seeing Ala hama walk over the men from the noun tains the crowd waited until the second half for some of the real excitement known only to football This came within five minutes after the kickoff Alabama got the ball within three feet of Ten nessees goal when by superhuman ef- fort the brave Tenneseans hurled the red shirts back and held the opposing line for downs. It was glorious defense and spurred on by the success of their efforts the Tennessee men got in the game with giant strides and soon began pound ing the Alabama line to pieces. Parker, Gudger and Richardson kept this up for the rest of the game and slowly but sure ly they drew near the Alabama line, only to get within two yards and hear the fa- tai whistle. The cold, damp wind chilled the crowd to the marrow, but faithful to Alabama they stuck it out and the roofing never ceased until the last man left the field. Game In Detail. On the toss up Alabama won and chose the east goal. Fuller for Tennessee kicked off for forty yards. With beaut- ful interference Lodge brought the ball back 90 yards. Alabama then opened up serious of bucks and 1t was quickly seen that Tennessees line was weak. On the first down McMahon was given the ball and he plunged over left tackle for five wards. Young Smith started around left end, but saw big opening and cross bucked between tackle and end for four yards. Tennessee was off side on the play and Alabama got ten yards. Burke bucked straight ahead for five yards Smith took a straight run over left tackle for eight yards. McMahon gained two more and Alabama then introduced her tackle play and Peavy went through for four yards. Smith made d cross buck for eight wards They worked him again for three wards and then two more on the same play Peevv, on tandem formation. went for eight yards over right guard. Boyles added three more Burke and Peevy then bucked for four yards each and Smith skirted the left end for eight wards. During this great series of plunges tie crowd was yelling madly and A.a- IEma, spurred on by the shol
