COLUMBIA WOFULLY WEAK, AMHERST HAS NO TROUBLE IN DEFEAT ING THE LOCAL ELEVEN % TO o. ING THE LOCAL ELEVEN % TO o. In weather better fitted for baseball the Amherst football team won the easiest Of victories from the Columbia University eleven at the Polo Grounds yesterday afternoon II a delightful innovaton for the football enthusiasts TO be able to sit in comfort in the stands discarding heavy wraps but it was hard upon the football players on the gridiron who do their best in football toys when the winds howl and the mercury in the weather gauge sinks of sight in its owly bulb Still II did not require the weather nor the game yesterday for that matter. to demonstrate the fact that the Columbia team this year does not amount to much. This fact was forciby demonstrated in the game against Brown only week ago. and yesterdays battle practically repetition OF the game of the previous Saturday. The Amherst warrior. played rather gingerly in the first half. being seemingly undecided just where to centre their point OF attack. The result was that the visiting players scored only once In that period. In the second half Columbia grew weaker. and The Amherst men rolled up the score until at the end OF the battle Amherst had Tailed 20 points. while Columbia had spent another week in fruit less attempts TO cross her opponents goal line Rough play there was some, but not much. In the second half Raftery and Lippe had an exchange Of fstc argument In the open, and the Amherst man seemed to be the aggressor he was sent TO the side lines for slugging and Delabarre took his place the end OF the Amherst line. Griswold was called upon relieve Priddy IN the second half. and these the only changes in the Am herst line during the game. Columbia showed some dash and pluck In the first half and her many friends the bleacheries began to hope that the team would show valiant front To its opponents. This hope. however, was dispeled soon the second half had been started The Amherst players during the inter mission had a good opportunity discuss the weak points OF their rivals. and when they appeared the field for the second time they were determined to make good a showing as Brown had done the previous Saturday. They banged the Columbia line and skirted the ends and scored touchdowns until the Columbia spirit almost crushed. Alsberg called I’m to take Stangland = place and soon after LAppe was sent in 10 relieve Cohn. Toward the end of the game Captain Weekes found that his men could make head way against superior force and science and he retired from the battle in disgust. Townsend taking his place at left halfback. only did Columbia have good chance to score. but when near the Amherst line tho local team lost the ball downs. Even in the exchange OF punts. little Lewis out kicked both Weekes and Goodman HOW THE GAME WAS PLAYED. weekes kicked Of for Columbia and Quill rushed the ball back hfteen yards Columbia lost ave yards for offside play. Quill tried the line. and failing. he punted. Weckes captured the ball and Il back twenty-five yards before he became the centre Of the human pyramid. The battle was waged In this way for ten minutes the ball being generally in Columbia territory. Then the Amherst men secured the leather and banged 1t down the line Quill skirted the end and deposited the ball the line inches inside tho foul line. The kCkout missed. and Amherst had lead Of to o. Little Roadway was made during the remaindcr OF the half. and when the relief stage arrived for bellows mending’‘ Columbia had the ball the Amherst B-yard line. Then II was announced through megaphoneS that Yale had a lead of u 10 ) in the battle with the Tigers at Princeton ~ which the Yale team was cheered most heartily. Indicating that the New-ttaven players were decided favorites with the POLO Grounds spectators Lewis kicked off In the second half and Fran bach carried the ball back ten yards. After an attempt at the line Weekes fell back for kick: The ball went out Of bounds. Washburn skirted the right end for twenty yards. but Columbia Sc cured the ball a tumble on her 35-yard line. In exchange of punts Amherst had the best or 1t, “A usual. Columbia braced up. and for several minutes showed disposition 10 night the issue. The ball carried to the Amherst lo-yard line on hne pIunges by Weekes. Smith and Frambach. The Amherst cohorts yelling frantically, Hold! Hold!’ Columbia lost the ball downs and her only chance to score was gone. Amherst then began to batter down the Columbia defence and carried the ball i’ll short plunges 100 yards. Washburn was sent over for touchdown and Lewis kicked the goal. With the score IL 10 against them the Column bia players began to wilt. and they kept on wilt ing to the end. Shortly after the lineup Wash burn made a pretty for seventy -hve yards for another touchdown for Amherst. and Lewis kicked the goal the score was; Amherst, IL; Column bia. O. Lewis made the next touchdown and also kicked tho goal with only three minutes of time left for play. With even this limited future the Amherst men made good use OF their time. In less than two minutes time Quill had made an other touchdown and Lewis kicked his fourth goal When the whistle blew Columbia had the ball on Amherst’s 40-yard line. but II did not look If the local players would be able to do much with be played The Columbia players rushed from the gridiron and were driven away Immediately. presumably none of them caring to answer pertinent questions.
