COLUMBIA WON. Middies Shut Out by a Little Hard Luck In a most interesting and evenly CONtested foot ball game the navy foot ball team was defeated at Annapolis yesterday afternoon by the Columbia University eleven in the closing game OF the season to 0. Some hard luck showed I’D against the middies. as they played better game than their opponents and made much greater gains In advancing the ball. but the thing which cost them the game was when one Of Belknap’s kicks was blocked by a Columbia lineman when the ball was in navy’s territory, where 1t had rested for only few minutes during the entire game. With hopors even near the close of the game the kick was blocked, Smythe Sc cured the ball on the forty-yard line and ran to within fifteen yards Of the nayy’s goal. Before the ball was in play Farley hurdled the line, and, despite the navy’s protests, the umpire allowed Columbia the five yards 1t claimed for Off side play With ten yards to gain. Smith and Weekes did some fine playing, the former scoring the touchdown on a terrific plunge through center. In the first half the middies did some fine playing and twice worked the ball near enough for Strassberger to try for field goal. but in each instance he regular back in the game. The navy presented stonewall defense up to the time of Columbia’s score. Afterward the mid dies seemed a little disheartened, as there were only three minutes to play, and CO. lumbia carried the ball twenty-five yards. The nayy’s tackles. Farley and Fretz, played splendidly on the defense. Strasswork of Soule and Whiting was fine. They prevented one Of Weekes’ famous end runs, Smith and Wallace were ColumbIa’s best players
